The Auto was a Vauxhall Astra Estate running a 1.8 litre petrol engine. It had acres of space but that particular engine (the 140 horsepower Z18XE I believe) was juicy as hell! The Nissan is a Qashqai running a 1.6 coupled to a manual box. I've heard loads of people say that the Qashqai isn't great on fuel but 450 miles on one tank of fuel is good in my book! I should clarify that the four tanks of fuel the Astra took for the Scotland run was 2 up there and 2 back. You know Formula 1 cars use 1.6 litre engines. And the reason for the Astra having worse fuel consumption could have nothing to do with the transmission. As you said, the Qashqai has a 1.6l compared to the Astra's 1.8l. There's also other factors to consider such as age, how aerodynamic they are and their efficiency. And probably the biggest one, the size of the fuel tank. Of course, that doesn't mean the transmission has no effect at all. The Astra was "07" reg and the Qashqai is a 62. The thing with the Astra, was that in owners circles, the Z18XE engine is unfortunately known as being particularly thirsty on fuel.

I've never even heard of that. (The Z18XE) I know my Astra had the engine code on one of the stickers though I don't recall which one. To be honest, I was never particularly happy with the cars fuel economy. Best change I did make to it however was to fit cruise control. £108 well spent

Manual all day long, you can have much more fun!! The only trouble with auto boxes in cars is you start left foot breaking and if you jump straight out of a manual and into an auto you can end up in the windscreen!!!! But an auto car with a naturally loud engine noise sound the dogs what its when it is driven properly (floored) I thought you're meant to use the right foot for both pedals. Racing drivers do left foot breaking, it helps with quicker laps. Some people have it to a T and others don't. The are loads of thing your meant to do when driving and people don't. Look up left foot breaking.

First (and only!) time I tried braking with my left foot in an auto I practically met the windscreen! Never again

Not forgetting that an auto is supposedly heavier on fuel No longer true. Many modern autos are more fuel efficient than their manual counterparts. My 2011 (Australian) Toyota Camry being a case in point.

You are, and never once have I been tempted to left foot brake.

I have always been one to prefer a manual car over an automatic as I love to be in control of the gears as well as it making the drive a bit more interesting. However with recent years of sleeping policeman on roads, 20mph zones and bumper-to-bumper traffic I have changed my preference to automatic for London driving. What is your preference in a car and why? Having driven both before buying my car I decided manual was a lot better the auto just felt wrong however the automatic Renault van that showed up from my company's fleet department this week is perfect for the w1 deliveries I was forced to do so much easier than changing gears in the manual counterpart

Manual for me. Although an Automatic Range Rover or an E63 would always be better. Got to love the kickdown!!
