I have always been one to prefer a manual car over an automatic as I love to be in control of the gears as well as it making the drive a bit more interesting. However with recent years of sleeping policeman on roads, 20mph zones and bumper-to-bumper traffic I have changed my preference to automatic for London driving.
What is your preference in a car and why?

If you've ever been in crawling/stop-start traffic on the M25,on a Friday night usually between J21 and J10 as I did for many years you'll plump for auto every time. However I do prefer a manual when driving in Wales, or Cornwall as I did when visiting relatives. You can't push start an auto, or choose a high gear if the road is icy.(Not forgetting that an auto is supposedly heavier on fuel)

I've never driven but I'd probably prefer an auto. Less things to do or worry about.

Choose a high gear...' Not always the best thing to do. You must have seen that video of an Arriva bus going up an icy slope and all the cars struggling. Though that's probably one of the few exceptions.

For London traffic, auto every time but personal preference is manual - drive and auto to Scotland and filled it up four times. Current manual Nissan did the journey up on one tank of fuel and the journey back on another. And it's petrol.

Semi-automatic would be ideal - as per the set up on the Routemaster or other buses such as Fleetline etc with being able to select 1-2-3-4 or fully Auto.

Manual all day long, you can have much more fun!! The only trouble with auto boxes in cars is you start left foot breaking and if you jump straight out of a manual and into an auto you can end up in the windscreen!!!! But an auto car with a naturally loud engine noise sound the dogs what its when it is driven properly (floored)

The Auto was a Vauxhall Astra Estate running a 1.8 litre petrol engine. It had acres of space but that particular engine (the 140 horsepower Z18XE I believe) was juicy as hell! The Nissan is a Qashqai running a 1.6 coupled to a manual box. I've heard loads of people say that the Qashqai isn't great on fuel but 450 miles on one tank of fuel is good in my book! I should clarify that the four tanks of fuel the Astra took for the Scotland run was 2 up there and 2 back.

And the reason for the Astra having worse fuel consumption could have nothing to do with the transmission. As you said, the Qashqai has a 1.6l compared to the Astra's 1.8l. There's also other factors to consider such as age, how aerodynamic they are and their efficiency. And probably the biggest one, the size of the fuel tank. Of course, that doesn't mean the transmission has no effect at all.

Defo a manual! As most have said, it's much more fun and it stops me from losing concentration. I keep saying that I'll get an auto but the moment I do, I'll think I'll regret it! So I won't. I've only driven an auto in the USA (except DML41421 at Wisley) when I drove across California and Nevada last year, it made it an easy drive but I didn't like the set up of the SUV's auto box, it kept wanting to kick down and jolting as soon as you took your foot off the throttle. I'd of loved to of driven a manual across some of those roads in the USA though, I think that that would of been fun!
