"Schedule deficiencies": Insufficient/excess running running time end to end, Incorrect intermediate timings (early in some places, late in others, but not balanced across various timing points on route), Insufficient recovery (aka stand) time to allow for a moderate late run, Insufficient light running time, (bus arrives at start of route late) Meal reliefs that are too short causing drivers to take buses over late during a delay due to legal/negotiated minimum rest period, Insufficient time between end of previous duty and beginning of next duty during a late run, meaning driver doesn't get legal/negotiated minimum rest period, Ferry vehicles unavailable due to late running / being utilised elsewhere, Lots of crew changes/finishing duties consecutively in the schedule, meaning a controller unwilling to push buses through to end of the route to protect later services, Ah...Now I see why at certain times eggmiester can't let the buses Go-Ahead I'm just TOO funny, aren't I? lol

Just your usual gap in the 172 service. Luckily the 171 follows the 172 and goes further. Otherwise people would just be waiting here forever.

Looking at the time of day it may well be that it's around the time when the frequency starts to be reduced for the evening. So you could be experiencing an extended headway more than a gap in service.
However it's at that point in the schedule where things can become tricky especially if there has been disruption to the service at some point prior to the headway being extended obviously this may have resulted in buses being curtailed to be back in position, which at that point in the schedule would leave a noticeable gap.
However having looked at the 172 schedule it still runs a 8-10 min headway way past the time you checked the journey planner so there was definitely a gap in the service there.

There was a gap in service on my 152 yesterday. I can't remember the time I left New Malden but everything was fine until I got to South Wimbledon where I got stuck in traffic. I was bit miffed when the lights at Haydons road stayed green for about three seconds meaning I had to wait for the lights to change three times before I could get through it. Nevertheless, I got to Colliers Wood at 1810 hrs (I was due at Merton Abbey at 1806) but I now had 6 bars on my Ibus MDT meaning I was losing ground with my leader (5 bars show I have perfect headway). I proceeded and got to Western Road at the Chelsea Fields bus stop where I experienced stationary traffic. Quite a few of the passengers got off a stop early as they didn't want to sit in the traffic. I finally got to Mitcham around 1833 (I was due there around 1820) where I picked up this lady who had some sort of shopping trolley which was too big to get through the front doors so she decided to get through the back. But she had trouble getting on with the trolley so she asked for the ramp. I got the ramp out but obviously this was causing more delays so when I got to the next stop, my MDT was now showing 8 bars. More congestion at Figges Marsh and at Mitcham Eastfields due to the train level crossing meant I now had the full 10 bars showing meaning my leader is so far away and there must be a gap of over 20 minutes for my bus It was around 1848 when the lady with the shopping trolley wanted to get off at Woodstock Way but due to the parked cars, there was no way I could parked my bus at stop and deploy the ramp for her so I decided to stop a considerable distance from the stop so I could let her out onto the pavement. But at this point a 152 was coming the other way so I held back from opening the doors in case the driver had difficulty getting through. He managed but it wasn't straight forward. Two stops before Pollards Hill, another 152 (Volvo) was approaching behind. I remember reaching Pollards Hill at 1900 and I should have departed there at 1854

This iBus MDT is quite interesting stuff, it must be like some kind of game maintaining it at 5. Surely, in your scenario your leader got stuck in that traffic you got stuck in,(reducing the MDT/gap and then it increasing back again after your leader pulled away from the traffic and you got stuck in it!) or where you cursed! With the MDT, I guess the important thing is getting it to 4-6 bars at the QSI monitoring points of the route your driving, which Im guessing drivers are know. I was going to add a rant about 3 second traffic lights, but I will take it somewhere more appropriate.

Preferably, I try and get it to 3 as I can take my time knowing that my leader is not too close and I won't pick up so many people Forgot to add that the reason why I couldn't catch my leader was because he caught up with his leader. I not certain if this was the case but when I got back to New Malden, I saw my leader and his leader just leaving. My leader was going out of service back to the garage whereas I only had 7 minutes stand time. The 152 run every 15 minutes at that time
