A point to note about the 178 is that school crowding will probably have worsened as a result of ferrying people to Thomas Tallis who might once have lived on the estate, on top of everyone who used the route before to get there. Greenwich Council will have been relocating Ferrier tenants anywhere in the borough it has properties available - that could be anywhere from Thamesmead to Greenwich. TBQH I don't see kids changing schools within the borough once they're settled in one - the only penalty with a longer commute is a time one if they have zip cards.

Back to the 89 briefly, you can't make comparisons between the 89 and 486 performance figures as they operate in differing traffic conditions, grated they share a common section, but that would be about it really. The 486 is also a shorter route and has a very robust schedule, unlike the 89. It also has a higher PVR of 16 (89 is 15 mon to fri and 16 sat) and runs to a higher frequency (6 to 8 mins peak, 89 is 8 to 10 mins peak). However I do think that there needs to be changes, extend the 486 to Slade Green is not a bad shout to be honest, curtail the 89 to BX and extend it to New Cross Gate via Deptford (N89 routing) PVR adjustments would be needed therefor thee would be a cost to such plans. I've never seen such demand, that the Bexleyheath-Slade Green section would require an even higher frequency running over it. Like you said, I would cut the 89 (and N89) back to Bexleyheath Bus Garage, and extend to New Cross Bus Garage (via Lewisham Way/ St Johns). Then extend the 469/B11 to replace the 89 between BX and Slade Green. Also raise the frequency of the 89 to match the 486.

There is quite a demand between BX and Slade Green, can vouch for that having driven the route for 7 years or so, same could also be said for the N89, particularly at weekends, so cutting the N89 back would mean a large area of Bexley losing it's night bus service, I know for a fact that would cause uproar, reflecting on the complaints we got when N89's were cut back to BX due to bad weather (snow) in the past.

Loads of broken links with your proposal, Connor (notably having to change to get west of Bexleyheath for Slade Green/Northumberland Heath/Barnehurst residents), and single deckers (neither 469 nor B11 in their current forms are suitable for bigger buses) will mean frequencies at peak hours would have to be ramped up considerably. I like egg's suggestion of 486 to Slade Green, 89 back to BX and extended to NX. I do a lot of socialising in Blackheath, so I'd have to change buses to get home with this proposal, but it's all for the greater good and it would also link more of Bexley to the Underground.

I like the idea of Eggmiester's to extend route 486 to Slade Green and cut route 89 back to Bexleyheath and extend from Lewisham to New Cross. Route 486 could possibly be upgraded to 24 hour service as well linking more of the Bexley area to the Jubilee Line at North Greenwich Station.
The problem with the overcrowding on route 178 during the Morning and afternoon is kids having to travel to school at Thomas Tallis. I wondered if when the 177 get the new hybrid double deckers next May if some of the displaced Scania,s could be transferred to Catford to double deck the 178 if the route continued to run direct via Kidbrooke Park Road. Just a thought!
