The Piccadilly Line was having a nightmare yesterday, Arnos Grove to Cockfosters closed for a time due to a track problem and further (signal?) problems on the Heathrow branch. As I passed through Northfields two empty trains on the Heathrow bound side and a platform full of unhappy passengers, I was just glad to be heading in the opposite direction.

As I passed through Northfields two empty trains on the Heathrow bound side and a platform full of unhappy passengers, I was just glad to be heading in the opposite direction. Problem is that when the Picc service collapses it is extremely difficult to restore the service quickly. There are not sufficient turnbacks close in to the centre where trains can be turned round quickly. When I used to use it regularly the one message I never wanted to see was "delays" of any sort (minor or severe). I just knew it was going to be dreadful. Upgraded lines with automatic train control are far easier to deal with, barring crewing issues, because the computer can be tasked with restoring the service within preset parameters.

A couple from yesterday: Nice drawing on the Service Information board at Paddington A sign for the Southbound Platform 3 at Oxford Circus showing "Bakerloo Line and Overground" The first one is excellent. The second one is abject laziness and no one checking.

Anyone know why is it at Seven Sisters station trains on Victoria line take forever at the platform. Usually 1 minute. Seems to happen at all kinds of times during the day and there are not even any driver changes here.

Seems to happen at all kinds of times during the day and there are not even any driver changes here. It's a regulation point in the timetable. It allows the computer to ensure that the precise headway is achieved on the core section south of Seven Sisters. I know trains run end to end almost all day but clearly LU have scheduled in a little bit of flex at a couple of places to ensure the service is not run on a knife edge all day. Similarly programmed dwell times vary by platform and direction throughout the day to reflect different levels of demand for people boarding and alighting.

However with the new timetable all trains run end to end except at the peak shoulders and start / end of service where trains start and end at Seven Sisters. There are no off peak terminators at Seven Sisters. This means one train shuttles back and forth between the centre platform and the staff platform at N Park depot. This provides a link for staff who need to travel to / from the depot. Passenger trains pause both north and south for timing control purposes.

I would have thought so, but every train seems to wait at the station the same amount of time. Then even northbound has a similar thing. I don't use the tube very much these days but IME there is some variation in the dwell times. Not much I will grant you but there is some in both directions. The control system on the Vic Line is very good at adjusting train speeds to keep to schedule or regain lost time if station dwell times are exceeded for some reason. Drivers get a cab "countdown" display for station dwell times and door close sequences and the line is scheduled to seconds now not half minutes as used to be the case.

Piccadilly Line seemed to start having problems from 3am
Now it's severe delays whole line
Why wasn't this flag ship line , taking first time tourists from the airport, upgraded long ago ?
