Just as horrific as the other proposals. The one good bit of news here is that pedestrians have the option of using the subways or the road crossings.

That's one less place for southbound buses to turn short at.

Click the Link, Read the Consultation and you will find out why... I did, still don't see why it needs changing. There are two main issues at Old Street. One is the safety (actual and perceived) of the current roundabout layout especially for cyclists. The second is the need to do something to the tube station. Years ago I used to cycle round the roundabout when I cycle commuted to work at Old St. It's a horrible junction as it's too fast and has too many lanes relative to the capacity of the approach roads (except the eastern bit of Old St). I suspect that increased cycle volumes have made things more hazardous and it is very hard to install effective cycle lanes on a big fast moving roundabout. Signalising each junction allows cycle lanes to work but you clearly lose capacity and you usually end up with some turns being banned because there is no holding capacity for vehicles to queue to make a turn. The second issue is coping with capacity in the tube station. Old Street is pretty grotty because of the subway access routes. It is also overloaded as the area has boomed in recent years. Reconfiguring the roundabout gives more surface area for a new entrance but the consultation info also says the intention is to use it as a worksite in later years. This would allow LU to do a comprehensive rebuild of the station and then sell off the surface land for an over station development. If the roundabout remained as is the site access would probably be very difficult indeed. Therefore it's about improving safety in the short term and doing up the tube station in the longer term.

Thanks. I reckon it will slow down traffic badly though.
