Lol fair enough in that respect You're forgetting that London buses are a business not a public service. Mileage and money in the bank for the operator is what matters not the traveling public. And it's the public who keep the London buses business running, after all the objective is to transport the public.

63 from Honor Oak to Peckham Rye. (Presumably so they can run light to PM)

Lol how can this be possible why on earth would the driver go back the opposite way to the bus station again? I have no idea. I also saw a Tower Transit VN on the 266 towards Brent Cross leave Hammersmith Lower Bus Station packed to rim with passengers go round the roundabout and go back into Hammersmith Lower Bus Station then drop the passengers then bus just stood their all night. I've seen a 72 do Hammersmith Lower Bus Station-Hammersmith Lower Bus Station, again packed to the brim, because the Hammersmith Bridge approach road (and Hammersmith Bridge) had just shut in front of the bus so it had to shove its passengers to a 533. That 72 then had to either go all the way via Putney Bridge to do what became the southern half of the 72 (as the 72 had been split at that moment, yet the bus was going to Roehampton), or be forced to do northern 72s. I didn't know as I went on a 533 home (yes, the few times where a closure benefits me - more buses home!).

There's have been a few 521s from Waterloo to Aldwych (while the Strand underpass was shut) Which is a curtailment to a point in diversion! Unusual. But as has been said it all adds to mileage operated and less lost mileage (and thus penalties) As has been said, some turns will be to relief points (ie 88 to Stockwell from Clapham Common) 507 to Millbank (from Victoria or Waterloo) is another very short one with just 5 stops.
