Depends on its routing which I suspect will still run via Sunray Avenue towards East Dulwich for locals who alight there currently. I also suspect Red Post Hill will remain towards Camberwell Green to upset as few people as possible. Anyway, it's an excellent extension and the spare stand can be fulfilled at Sainsbury's, Just a shame people have to wait until next week.

Sunray Avenue strikes me as a random terminus point for the 42 so I'm definitely for the 42 gaining a southern extension, but it's mentioned that this will "offer direct access from Dulwich to King's College Hospital", don't the 40/176/185 already provide this link? The 42's proposed extension will also form a somewhat awkward and indirect U-shape at the route's southern end.

Sunday Avenue isn't an ideal place for a bus stand Nothing wrong with it as a terminus point, it's served the job it was made to do. The trees have restricted the 42 to single deckers and it's in a residential side street with no toilet facilities for drivers, quite honestly it's hard to think of a worse place for a bus stand. It should have gone to Sainsburys from the outset where there are no such problems.

I'm not against this, but it's good to see some more use made out of the 42. I'd have also liked DDs to help in the peaks, can't think of the elderly boarding a packed bus in the peaks getting to/from home/shops. I wonder how the loads on the 42 between Kings College Hospital and East Dulwich Sainsbury's will be? If 42 was to go on Lordship Lane (unless it goes via 37 to Goose Green which is missing out a bit of action of Dulwich Village), I'd think it'd be lightly used but hey well, not like any other links have no lightly used sections.

Yes I think it is a good move although I would expect loadings to be fairly modest on the extension but it's a link to Sainsbury from Red Post Hill area and a link to KCH from East Dulwich Grove but obviously the 40,176 and 185 provide a far more direct link between Sainsburys and KCH.

Before the stops were moved at Sainsbury's, there was no room to terminate buses as far as I'm aware - the P13 would stop right outside the entrance to Sainsbury's itself in the car park.!When the 42 was extended, they had no plans at the time to give it deckers and plus, the trees probably wasn't a big problem either at the time. Besides, there are plenty of bus stands without toilet facilities in residential roads all over London.

As Sid said the people writing the blog will be looking at things purely from a Dulwich Village point of view. The other routes are of no great relevance to Dulwich Village which is stuck with the P4. I suspect they won't mind having an extra bus service within reasonable distance - especially one which gets people directly into City. While I understand the remarks about possible low usage I have a sneaking suspicion this might do better than expected. Sometimes these "odd" extensions prove rather popular because they make previously awkward journeys viable.

The most important thing here is a direct connection from Dulwich Hospital to KCH. It's a 5 min walk from the hospital to the 40, 176, 185, P13 (and 37 which serves the hospital) stop on Goose Green, although patients can take a short walk along Melbourne Grove to the East Dulwich Station stop for the 40, 176, 185 and 484 to KCH.
I can't remember the route number, but there was also a Sainsbury's circular in the 90s which started from Sainsburys and went to Denmark Hill, Sunray Avenue, North Dulwich Stn, East Dulwich Grove, Goose Green and back to Sainsburys.

Good point about Dulwich Hospital especially as a lot of King's patients use Dulwich Hospital as well. The S13 was the circular route that ran from Sainsbury's as I remember it in my old 1995 Brixton bus guide I had years ago.
