Not sure if anyone has seen this but on this link saferoxfordstreet.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/nobonus-are-tfls-bus-excess-waiting.html?m=1 gives a fairly good explanation of headway and EWT and so forth. Shows the pressure drivers are under to maintain the headway. I agree with the authors comments about drivers having enough to worry about on the road. I must admit the part where it is asked "what's in it for me" with regards to keeping an even headway, it is replies "Job security" yes it's true but to put it blatant like that is wrong IMO.

I think you may have posted this in the wrong board. Could we please have this thread moved to "General Bus Discussion" mods? Ive read something about Headway. I don't really like it to be fair but it makes controller's jobs a bit more easier

I must admit the part where it is asked "what's in it for me" with regards to keeping an even headway, it is replies "Job security" yes it's true but to put it blatant like that is wrong IMO. This is Mr Kearney again. All he has done is use info sneaked to him by "mystery driver x" about the bus performance regime and then spun it. I've seen endless tweets about this with the ranting assertion that TfL wanting the buses to run to a reasonable quality level means bus drivers are really random killing machines ruthlessly mowing down pedestrians. Nothing about pedestrians being clueless and not looking where they're going, being distracted by music blaring into their ears or checking Facebook on their phones. There are two sides, or possibly more in this case, to any argument but Mr Kearney never provides them because his sense of anguish and hate overrides everything. He has just decided that the words in those slides don't mean what they say and is saying they mean the opposite. AFAIK he's never sat in a training session for drivers, never had I-Bus explained or anything else. His comments are just wild spin. I have seen no evidence at all that anyone instructs drivers to drive carelessly or recklessly. In fact most of the comment here is that everything is about people going slowly resulting in bus journeys that are beyond tedium. There have been umpteen Mayor's Questions on this topic because Green Party politicians have picked up on Mr Kearney's moaning. There is no firm evidence to say that the performance regime causes accidents. In fact there is no evidence from Mr Kearney to show that bus drivers are demonstrably "at fault" in the majority of accidents. I've no issue with people being concerned about passenger safety but Mr Kearney isn't bothered about passengers on buses. He is only concerned about people who have suffered as he has suffered. That's a very poor basis on which to conduct a campaign. You will note that his aim is to "get a TfL Director's Head on a Plate" by trying to get them prosecuted for Corporate Manslaughter. I also assume a related issue on from that is of compensation being paid to accident victims. A full and proper reasoned factual debate is what is needed if only to put this issue to rest for a long time.

Mr Kearney's popped up a lot this weekend on the forum, hasn't he?
There are in my opinion always problems with very extreme views in anything, so that in itself means I agree with all you say here. snoggle. Pedestrians can behave in the oddest ways.
From one or two other posts on this forum, people may have worked out that I am running the London Marathon this year. I do a lot of my training on the route of the marathon, and that means being a careful runner : stopping for red lights, looking at side roads and not just charging into the road, being aware of what's around me, that sort of thing. Obviously I see lots of other runners when I'm out of a weekend. Music in their ears, eyes straight forward all the time, no road sense, running in the dark wearing no fluorescent clothing, I could go on. They'd be the first to complain if a bus hit them because they weren't being careful *sigh*

Again I have to disagree with Kearney. As others have said its all about slowing down or taking short cuts out of service to maintain headway, never speed up.

Agree with others - there are plenty of people who really don't look where they are going or are aware of their surroundings - Oxford Steeet was a good example last night with TfL staff telling people to get out of the road and those same people only moving when the driver had to use his horn multiple times. People with headphones on annoys me, particularly at work as 9 times out of 10, they can't hear me asking them to if they can politely move out of the way.

Pretty much every time I make the left turn onto Regent Street the horn has to be used as no one looks or even cares if a bus is turning right into them

Good thing about now being in a train is, the horn is a hell of a lot louder I think Oxford street/regent street has been made worse by the X type crossing now and the occasional street artist that strategically sets up on the sodding corner and people gather round to see a man tapping on empty buckets of paint with twigs or someone beat boxing repeatedly saying boots and cats and boots and cats and boots and cats (I just made you beat box) and they stand right on the sodding corner meaning people walking have to walk around and are often not looking the right way.

I happened to be searching for something else but fell across these Mayor's Answers from Dec 2015. They have some relevance to Mr Kearney's so called claims of bus safety.
And on a sort of related issue TfL have listed the routes that have had reliability schedules in recent months.

This made me laugh, boots and cats, boots and cats. I think and don't hate me for saying this but London's road network doesn't suit headways. It would work if we had more priority lanes on some aspects but when you account for mecahnical buses, incidents and general loading at peak times it's not always perfect. One example was every bus was 10 minutes late but one driver is messing about. But when i read Privatising London's Buses I understand where the need for QSI etc came into play! I wont say anymore but I recommend that book, it puts a lot into perspective.

I stopped reading it when I got to this part. He clearly has no understanding. The middle bus is running early not the last bus needing to hold back. Clearly wrote by an idiot.

Thing what annoys me is idiots like this get airtime on the news and the usual BBC to paint every industry as bad, but they never look at themselves. I think it is time we have adverts on BBC and it is privitised; many on the bafoons working there seems tonot realise how good they have it. How many times would we see people walk out in front of a bus, but not to a car or motorcycle, why? Because the bus is seen as slow. When we get things like this speed adaption trial, it does nothing in the public perception of thinking buses are slow. We would soon get people trying the same thing with Underground trains. Yes there are cases of it being the drivers fault, but there are many cases it is not and this is the problem. For instance, why stand right by or walk by the kerb on the road if you are not waiting to cross. Why move out to the bus as it approaches a bus stop. or the countless amounts of vehicles that expect they have a God given right to cut in front of the bus
