Or scrapped altogether like the Brixton Splash! I don't want to see the Notting Hill Carnival go but if people can't refrain from stabbing each other, then what's the point?

The event is great and it would be less special if it was held in Hyde Park and no doubt would have an admission price rather than the current system of asking for donations from those who can afford it.
The stabbing is a sad reflection of the MO of a few but in general it's a very friendly day out. It's a wonderful celebration of multi-culturism in London.
I don't think events should be scrapped just because they cause a day of road closures, it's only once a year.

The carnival is special and 400 people out of 1 million (an absolute minority) causing trouble shouldn't quell the fun. I live in the area. It's mine for 363/4 days. I'm more than happy for others to enjoy it for the other 2 and bring some new character to it.

I'm more than happy for others to enjoy it for the other 2 and bring some new character to it. I confess I've never been - partly over concern over crime and partly because I don't like being in very large crowds which can become a bit daunting. Also being a "fat lump" can cause issues with accidently brushing people because people (and I) can misjudge space. I can see that causing issues with some people who'd "get the hump" to put it mildly. Only takes the slightest thing for a row to develop so I avoid the risk. It's bad enough walking up Wood Green High Road with people treating me as if I'm invisible (hardly ) and get a*sey about it if I don't get out of *their* way. For all that I don't like the idea of forcing the Carnival out of the area it was born in. I suspect there is a long standing "secret" campaign to corporatise the event, charge admission and basically screw a load of money out of people. Over 1 million visitors equals a lot of money to get your hands on. The very sudden and clearly organised "campaign" by the police (past and present) to offer a running commentary to BBC London about all that is wrong with the Carnival is noteworthy. I notice they're all complaining about being "punchbags" - if you don't like the risks then don't the job folks! You all know what might ensue but hopefully won't. I note also that Victoria Borwick, local MP (and former Assembly Member and Deputy Mayor), is also saying it should be moved but then she would, wouldn't she?

I've only been to the event a few times, most recently a few years ago with wife and grandchildren and whilst the atmosphere was very friendly and we saw no sign of crime it wasn't an experience I really want to repeat. Just the sheer numbers all crammed into narrow roads in baking hot temperatures, I couldn't help thinking then that it would have been far more enjoyable and safer in Hyde Park.
