Not sure if this has been posted yet.. Road.cc and City AM are reporting that City of London corporation are planning to make Bank junction Bus and Cycle access between 7am and 7pm on weekdays from early next year as part of an 18-month trial Road.cc article on bank junction & City AM article The ultimate aims/plans are for: – A closure of either from King William Street & Princes's Street (N/S) or Cornhill & Poultry (E/W) – A closure of all roads onto the junction City of London page on Bank junction I'm not sure whether City workers will be OK with the cut off of taxis from Bank as it will not make it easy for them to hail or travel via taxi. Also highly doubt the station would be able to provide a sufficient alternative for travelling city workers.

Why can't the City workers use public transport rather than using taxis - I thought the image of public transport being for the poor and elderly had long vanished in London?

It's not that they can't use public transport but it can be a challenge due to Bank Station getting very congested. On top of that the Central Line and its constant rush hour delays (one a near daily basis there is a passenger alarm pulled Eastbound in the AM rush hour). Although these are short term issues which may be rectified following Bank Station upgrade and New Tube for London upgrade.

Ever the optimist. Bank is really beyond fixing. Yes the works on the Northern Line part of the station will help but the site is hopelessly constrained by the surrounding buildings, the junction and track alignments. It's almost impossible to resolve the overcrowding and congestion to any meaningful extent. Crossrail may bring some short term relief which may take enough pressure off in the short term while the N Line works are done but the Central Line will never, ever be "quiet" or even averagely crowded in the peaks. Travel patterns are far too well established and the lure of the City, Stratford and Oxford St are simply being reinforced by Crossrail thus providing no relief to the Central Line. One day someone might be brave enough to say the unsayable - "close Bank station for some lines and realign routes and tunnels so the rest of the place has a chance to work properly". That's a very "blue sky" type of view but if we carry on adding 3-6% patronage on the tube year in, year out then Bank becomes inoperable sooner rather than later. It's already very borderline as to whether the place could be fully evacuated safely and quickly enough in the event of a fire. The capacity of vertical (platform to street) links is poor as is the within complex circulation / holding capacity. The Northern Line works give some breathing space but every time you add new bits to the complex it just becomes ever more difficult to run. We're going to get a new Walbrook entrance to the W&C and then a Cannon St entrance for the Northern Line. This on top of multiple entry points in and around King William St, Bank junction, Cornhill plus the 4 or 5 entry points to Monument.

A date has been set for Monday 22 May for The Bank junction changes. Exciting stuff! It will be interesting to see how this will work over the coming 18months. Excellent to see City Of Ondon be bold enough to go ahead with this scheme.
