Not anything original by me but IanVisits has a recent article setting out details for a new Western entrance to be built at Stratford. It will allow faster access from the Carpenters Estate area. The new entrance will be at Jubilee Line platform level and will be created out of the LU car park area. www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2017/01/20/new-entrance-proposed-for-stratford-tube-station/It will make Stratford the station with the most entrances / exits outside of Zone 1 on the Underground (can't think of anywhere else in Z29 that has 4 entrances).

This is great news! this makes so much sense I always thought the emergency exit at DLR platforms had potential for providing western access but this entrance will trump this. With that said it solves no problems that occur at stratford on a regular basis during the peaks. The problem centres a lot around interchange between lines and this issue will only get worse with the Elizabeth Line. I do however think this will be good for crowd control during football matches etc.

I do however think this will be good for crowd control during football matches etc. I dug around in the planning application documents and there was a lot of very detailed work done by consultants on a range of options for this entrance including it being at high level (by the DLR) with lifts and escalators up from street level. The analysis also showed the passenger flow impacts around the station of the different options. I scanned that document rather than plough through all the detail but you can't say someone didn't properly assess the impact of various possible options. The article refers to extra lifts and reusing a disused corridor in the station but I couldn't see anything in the proposal that described that. Stratford is fully accessible but some of the access to the more far flung platforms is convoluted to say the least if you're in a wheelchair or wheeling someone in a buggy. You could easily miss a train if you misjudged the access times for these routes.

I personally think LU should should face the expensive fact of widening the centre subway which links to Stratford Bus station as this is the one that can very busy, although the Jubilee Line subway is quite often busy it is fairly wide in comparison. I would be interesting to know where the other hidden subways of Stratford are... On step free interchange, Stratford has to be one of the best equipped major hubs for step free/interchange and access in East London. I would argue that the only challenging route would be from platforms 13- 16 to platforms 10A-12 as they require using at least 3 lifts (which appears difficult to remedy), most other interchange routes are only two lifts if you choose the right subways. It would be nice if they upgraded the short lift between the subway and the Jubilee line platforms it always seems to break down but is extremely popular with buggies and those with luggage. Long term (within the next decade) a fifth entrance should be considered from the east subway to the current location of the Stratford coach stop, as this would be another entrance that links direct to Stratford Town Centre from most of the stations platforms.
