If you look overall at the route, it is well connected to other modes of transport, such as the Jubilee line which mirrors the London Bridge to Canada Water corridor, London Overground from Surrey Quays and Canada Water connects with Shoreditch, so while there are issues along the whole route, the reduction is probably where it's well served by rail, which leaves the Surrey Quays to Lewisham section being the bulk of the problem, although some local journeys between Deptford Bridge and Lewisham can be relieved by the DLR.
Lewisham to Catford is well served by other routes.

A couple of issues with the Route 40 suggestion. A reduction in capacity between Camberwell Green and the Elephant via Camberwell Road would put pressure on the 35 for journeys to London Bridge, it'd also increase journey times from East Dulwich to London Bridge, along with adding extra passengers on the 176 as it'd be the only direct route between Denmark Hill and Dulwich. Route 176 is already busy as it is and the 40 allows some extra capacity in that area. Also Peckham Road/Camberwell Church Street would see buses going to Dulwich Library in both directions along a long section of road.
I know there are areas where routes going to to the same destination in both directions, such as the 122 and 202 to Crystal Palace in Kirkdale, yet it only affects two stops.

The North Peckham area could also do with some more local links to Walworth Road, Camberwell Green and Kings College Hospital There's an indirect link to Walworth Road by getting off the bus at the opposite end of East Street on the 42/343 and walking along East Street or the 343 stops at the end of Walworth Road at the Elephant end and it's a short walk to the main shops. Agree about Kings. Incidentally there isn't really a direct bus link from Peckham to Kings at all, the 345 stops the closest in Coldharbour Lane from Peckham Road, but again it's a change of bus from the 343 in Peckham or the 42 in Albany Road which does serve Kings directly.

Will be interesting to see if Merton keeps her doors open right through, helping A with more than one N155 bus. I also used to miss the old Boxing Day services where routes were longer than their standard routing. The 37 for example was extended beyond Putney Station via the 337 to Richmond. Oh yes, I used to go on Boxing Day trips to Richmond on the extended 37. A nice day out!

I had to pay to commute to school and used adult travelcards to go to college. So much has changed and while at the time I was against free travel for young people, it does help a lot towards overall education costs.
However I can sympathise with those who travel on single decker routes during the school run as they do quite frankly become school routes in all but name.

Thanks, I ended up riding the R70 and 490 today. Nice and quick (not being a rugby Saturday) and shaved a bit off my Oyster rail fare touching in and out in Richmond instead of Twickenham.

Just wondering what is the quickest/best route to get to Twickenham from Richmond? Journey Planner gives four routes with an average 15 min ride, or should I just go on SWT instead?

Good news if true. Relieves the pressure on the 343 in North Peckham and the Aylesbury Estate towards Elephant and Peckham while giving new connections to other parts of SE London.
It'll also release capacity at Peckham Bus Station, which could be used to terminate another route.

I think a night tube is a good idea, and it eases pressure off the bus network. However, having the Night Tube won't kill off night buses though. Frequencies however might be brought in line with the Sunday-Thursday frequencies. It may also create opportunities for more night services linking Tube stations with suburbs which don't exist. But back on topic : this is a good idea, however I have a feeling the proposed x15 min frequency will be inadequate... The Northern line between Camden Town and Morden will have a 7.5 min frequency as the 4tph is per branch.

363 at the Sydenham Hill/Kirkdale junction gives excellent views of Central London if travelling on an Elephant & Castle bound bus.
I like the 405 as it leaves Coulsdon and enters the more scenic Merstham despite the M25.

From what I recall, the P13 didn't have a Sunday allocation until Travel London, now Abellio took over the tender. The 197 replaced the northern section of the 312 which had a 20 minute service when it was created in September 1990. That was an improvement on the 12B which was every 30 minutes in the days of pre-Sunday trading.
Even a busy trunk route in my area, Route 176 drops from 8 minutes on Mon-Sat to 12 on Sundays. That used to be every 15 minutes.
