The legend that is Sir Bruce Forsyth has sadly passed away today aged 89 www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-40978576I absolutely loved his hosting skills and catchphrases on shows like the Generation Game, Play Your Cards Right (my favourite of the shows he done) & The Price is Right.

This popped up as a notification on my phone earlier. It did quite hit me a bit when I read it. I grew up watching him on the TV, mostly on Strictly Come Dancing. Hope his soul rests in peace.

As I have said on Twitter we're almost at the end of an entire generation of entertainers like Brucie. He was pretty exceptional given the length of his career and was fortunate to have more than career resurrection courtesy of television. Given how technology and tastes have changed in recent years I don't think we will ever see the likes of him or Barry Cryer (not gone yet thank goodness), John Inman, Larry Grayson, Les Dawson, Bob Monkhouse, Frankie Howerd, Arthur Askey etc etc. I know people laugh about / scorn the repeats of the Good Old Days but if you see those top of the bill acts and how they could work an audience and entertain people you'll see their genius and skill.
Nice to see you, to see you .... nice.

What a legend RIP - grew up watching The Generation Game , Play your cards Right in the early 90s and also Strictly more recently. I think he was extremely well liked by all, even news reporters seem generally upset when talking about him.
Didn't he do well

Didn't he do well Sadly, I've seen some people on Facebook who seem happy he is dead which is extremely unfair for someone so well respected - what ever happened to not liking someone but being respectful about their passing!

Such a kind, loving man. We have lost one of the BBC's greatest legends today. I send my condolences out to his family and those who were close to him. The BBC shan't be the same without him Sir Bruce Forsyth may you rest in peace

I don't think we will ever see the likes of him or Barry Cryer (not gone yet thank goodness) We often brand people 'legends' and the like but in this case, it's true. I've been lucky enough to see Barry Cryer 'in conversation' at a couple of events over the last few years. It's time BBC4 did a Barry Cryer night to celebrate his work and get his anecdotes and reminiscences recorded once and for all. He spans the eras like Sir Bruce did - who else could have written for Bob Hope and Kenny Everett? Anyway, he tells a Sir Bruce story from his variety days. Bruce was struggling to break through and was on the verge of throwing it all in to run a tobacconists. Barry lost touch with him and eventually Bruce made it big with Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Barry then bumped into him one night and asked 'Ah, whatever happened to the tobacconists?' Bruce's response? 'Postponed'. So farewell Brucie: now you'll never open that tobacconists.

I love the idea of a Barry Cryer night - ideally a weekend though. Us TOTP twitter loons keep bombarding BBC Four with demands for the Kenny Everett show to be repeated (as it used to be shown after Top of the Pops). It would be hugely popular if it was - if only to show today's generation what we got away with but loved on the telly back in the 70s and 80s. Us oldies could wallow in nostalgia at the same time. TV today is so dull in comparison. Love the Brucie story too.

A very sad day. We have lost one of Saturday Night Television's greatest hosts over the past 70 years. I didn't watch Strictly that much, but as a kid, I remember referring to Bruce Forsyth whenever my parents decided to watch Strictly, seeing a picture of him on TV or in an advert as "the man with the funny white beard". I did however learn that his health had been deteriorating since he retired from Strictly, but this still came as a shock. He was such a kind and generous man over the years. May you rest in peace, Brucie

Sadly, there has been plenty who have said a bad word about him.

Sadly, there has been plenty who have said a bad word about him. Probably just internet trolls? I don't think anybody in 'real life' had anything bad to say about him?

Bruce's episode of Have I Got News for You in 2003 was also a classic. He started by announcing the programme title then inviting the audience to respond For You Have I Got .... News!
Then he discussed how discredited the Gulf War was as there were no weapons of mass destruction found. He remarked in a sombre way that it would have been nice to see them (at least to give the reasoning behind the War some credibility), then 2 seconds later perked up and added To See Them, and the audience shouted Nice!
