Not another municipal lost but I guess Transdev are not a bad buyer for this operation. Shame to see another piece of municipal history killed off but I imagine councillors have no choice as it's not the most vibrant, huge ridership area in the country and I suspect Rosso are loss making. I am surprised, looking at the website, that there is quite a large network of services. I do wonder if Blazefield might mount a little incursion into Accrington which is largely in the hands of small local independents these days.

Not particularly surprised after reading the relatively recent Buses magazine article. One of the main points in the article was the lack of passengers.

Sad to see another council run operator sell up. While Rosso will be a good fit for Transdev who run other buses in SE Lancs, it means we will be down to 9 municipal operators:- Lothian, Blackpool, Halton, Warrington, Nottingham, Ipswich, Reading, Newport and Cardiff.

And only 3 of those are in strong form - Lothian, Nottingham and Reading. All the rest are not in good markets with decent growth prospects. It is only competition concerns that must be holding back the likes of First, Stagecoach and Arriva from trying to grab the NW and S Wales businesses. That only leaves Transdev, Rotala and Go Ahead as possible buyers for these other businesses as they would be far less likely to trigger competition concerns although Transdev might struggle to get both Halton and Warrington and Rotala might have issues trying to get Blackpool. For the record I'd prefer not to see any more sales of municipals as I think they provide an important local bulwark against the all pervading corporateism and mass cuts of the big groups.

Blackpool Transport are also fairly strong and have recently made a big investment in fleet upgrades and also own a lot of the market around Blackpool, with the rest I do agree that they may not be in the best position growth/market wise, I read on another forum that Halton Transport was planned to be sold to RATP, however the plans fell through

Rotala could be in a strong position to consider Halton or Warrington, except that they may for now have spent as much as they currently can on other acquisitions recently.

Thinking back to your post, and not all is lost regarding the big 3 and Cardiff or Newport. Sure, Stagecoach is a write-off as they have so many routes from there into the Valleys. Conversely, Arriva do not run into south Wales so could bid for either. First have routes into Cardiff from Bridgend & Swansea but at most 1 route into Newport, from Bristol. So maybe they could bid for Newport even if not Cardiff.

Looks like Transdev has been the latest company to drop Wrightbus - They have ordered 19 E400MMCs to be split between Burnley (For X43 'Witchway' service) and York (For Cityzap):
