The Coney Hall loop is unsuitable for double deckers. Thanks for your answer, I too thought the roads are a bit tight around Coney Hall. However, deckers do squeeze down some fairly narrow roads, the 194 on Shirley Way for example. Is it a situation that there are overhanging trees as is the case with deckers never being considered on the 146 to Downe? Or perhaps more parked cars than there were 35 years ago when Titans ran the route? Back to the 138, perhaps deckers could be considered if short trips to, say, Hayes Station were added to the timetable. It could be the low trees as well on the Coney Hall loop restricting the 138, there are some in that estate, but my guess would be the small section on Layhams Road, which has quite a narrow lane, especially at the turn into Birch Tree Avenue. Regarding the 146, the restrictions for routes have tightened, with TfL being very strict and not allowing any buses that they consider unsuitable.

That makes perfect sense re the turn into Birch Tree Avenue as I seem to recall the old version of the route didn't serve Layhams Road, it turned left at the Glebe Way / Croydon Road roundabout and terminated in Kingsway. Although I live in hope that some way can be found to run deckers on the route as it's been part of my life on and off for nearly 40 years!

Yes the 138 did have double deckers years ago before the loop at Coney Hall was added. The 146 has never had OPO double deckers, it was RT/RM and nothing but single deckers since, narrow lanes and the terminus at Downe can be awkward, some drivers were reluctant about RMs.

I'd imagine it's low trees or any rouge parked cars that are the issue as a 12m Omnicity from the 358 batch has done the full 138 routing loop included. Modern double deckers in London today generally range between 10.2m to 10.9m

Why can’t the 444 be decked? Because it was recently won with Electric SDs.

465 - Low trees in the Leatherhead and Box Hill areas Just wondering then if the route was to terminate at Leatherhead and another route takes the Leatherhead to Dorking section, would 465 be allowed to be DD?
