It is a massive fail. Shows up the sheer waste of money and resources on this crass patronising stupidity. Shows TfL to be completely out of touch with reality, throwing resources at irrelevancies and profound irritants which will have no benefit whatsoever to safety, quite possibly the reverse. Demeans the brand. The proliferation of pointless notices and stuff like this simply creates white noise and diverts attention away from any actually meaningful information. Whilst I don't disagree about the proliferation of announcements generally I don't see what is so awful about this particular one, in principle it's no different to the days when the conductor shouted "hold tight" before giving the starting signal.

The clue is in your statement...' before'. Whereas when this announcement plays, a lot of the time it's after the bus sets off. So it's understandable why it's being questioned so much, and rightly so.

Not perfect but hardly any big deal. I don't really think we need route "x to xxxxxxx" at every stop quite honestly.

I think the blind and partially sighted would disagree with you That's a good point, and personally I don't find that announcement annoying as it's short and to the point. I must admit I prefer announcements to be proper sentences on trains, however with buses stopping much more frequently it's surely best to keep them as short as possible. While I'm not sure the new announcement is needed at all, I suspect less people would find it annoying if it was simply "hold tight please" or similar. "This bus is about to move" is pointing out the obvious after the first part, and just makes the announcement longer than it needs to be.

I think the blind and partially sighted would disagree with you It's a bit late once you're on the bus to find out it's the wrong one, if in doubt far easier to ask the driver. I think partially sighted people will be far more concerned about poor quality blind displays including the many unlit ones?

At least there is more usefulness to hearing “x to xxx” when it’s played - stating the obvious about a bus moving is a absolute waste of decent technology. As astock5000 said, announcing hold tight please makes more sense because it wouldn’t matter if the vehicle was moving or not.

I thought about that, but some of those people may not want to speak (too embarrassed, shy, etc?), or even be able to! As for guide dogs that could be with them, I'm not sure how well they can see bus blinds Yes reading them in the first place is bothersome, but that's another issue...

I note that today, I saw '.. 269 to Bexleyheath, Shopping centre' instead of normal show '269 to Bexleyheath, Shopping centre' same to routr 208 as well. Why add two dots before route number? Stranger.

Simply program it to go off when the doors close. Problem solved.

Before I give my view on this, I want to state an incident on the 325 I had a couple years ago.
There was a woman with a pram who had secured it in the wheelchair bay, with the toddler strapped in the pram she went to find a nearby seat with her 2 other children. Before the Quay Road bus-only link, routes 325 and 366 were routed along the A406 and A13. It was coming off the A13 heading to Sainsbury's that the bus was picking up speed. The driver was doing 35 when turning onto Jenkins Lane and the pram immediately toppled over, right side up. If it wasn't for the infant being strapped into its pram, there would've certainly been injuries.
The driver then got out of the bus cab, and she began to berate the mother on not staying with the pram and how irresponsible of an act she just committed. Despite I know her to be speeding (stood near the front of the bus); she immediately denounced her involvement in the incident and placed all the blame on the passenger. Anywho, sure enough months later came the "for your child's safety, please stay with your pram" notice.
TfL are not playing this "hold on, this bus is about to move" message to inform/warn passengers. They are doing it to resist any form of lawsuits, judged by the fact that the message is played after the bus moves. It's just a box ticking exercise this message is, pure and simple.

I don’t think anyone is questioning the reasons behind TfL doing it, annoying as it may be. It’s the timing of it that renders the whole thing absolutely useless. I’d go as far as to say it’s going to cause more accidents than it prevents with elderly people rushing to get to their seats as they think the bus is going to move when in fact the driver is waiting for them.

First heard this yesterday afternoon on a T on the 197 which only played out just before the next destination was read out. Been on all the buses I've been on, playing about 5 seconds after the bus pulls away from the bus stop, except for once on the 185 as it was about to pull away from the bus stop. I liked those announcements on the single decker 257 with First London and on 167 with Blue Triangle (prior Go-ahead takeover) "Stand clear.. Doors opening! der der der der....... Doors closing! der der der der"

I will be amazed if this announcement survives past next week. On the other hand knowing TfL I would not be surprised if 'the bus is about to turn' makes its debut.
