For the amount of money spent could they not have built a crossing between the two piers ? I know Silvertown tunnel is coming now but surely a draw bridge with a toll of some sort would of been feasible , just seems a bit outdated to me.
I know there is fierce opposition to new river crossings due to pollution etc but like I always say the traffic is only going to get worst best to cater for it now rather than later ?

And where is the land to provide a bridge and approaches in that part of London? Also a bridge would take years in the planning and construction and would cost vastly more than replacing the ferries. I also believe the Woolwich Ferry is established and protected as a free service by statute. TfL would have to go via Parliament to get the legislation revoked and I can't see them succeeding. The Free Ferry is a popular and well used service - especially for those vehicles that can't get through the Blackwall Tunnel. The alternative is for that traffic to run miles further via Central London or the M25.

Just a reminder the ferry closes next Friday 5th for 2 months so grab a ride on the current vessels why you can.

I had a period when I virtually lived on those ferries (actually the previous generation, when there were four, with three in operation at the peak) and I have an olfactory memory of the tar lapping up on the North Woolwich shore. If I ever smelled it again, I'd instantly recognise it.
