Until 1992, the 196 had peak extensions to Islington from it's usual terminus at Oval so it was possible to do a Norwood Junction to Islington journey in one bus - the peak journeys was removed and it was cut back to Brixton as well until 2005 when it was extended in place of the 322 to Elephant & Castle. The 196 peak extensions were from Brixton to Kennington Park, Post Office. There were three early AM Islington journeys introduced to replace the old 172 and these lasted until about '92-ish when they were absorbed into a three journey early AM route 3B from Herne Hill to Angel. Therefore it was possible to travel along Rosebery Avenue on a Cityrama DMS or a Chelsham garage Atlantean. Moz

From which direction at Penge? Could this possibly be the ONLY scheduled Routemaster working into Beckenham Junction ever, too?

The 54 often had RM's before OPO conversion in 1978. No scheduled RM working on Monday to Friday before OPO conversion, and Beck Junc workings were entirely peaks, from Croydon direction, so I think I've answered my own question, the 126 and 194A never having experienced RM operation, scheduled or unscheduled.

From Ian's Bus page The RM on the 54 is from Elmers End Garage, which never worked that route M-F. The other route I mentioned was the 194A, not 194B, which would have found it hard to work RMs as they never appeared on the blinds!

ED did have a M-F allocation at one time but it was before ED had RM's. I was aware that it was the 194A you mentioned, the route was withdrawn before ED ever got RM's.

I only lived near, or on, the 54 route from 1969 to 1988, plus working in Beckenham in 1967/8 and schooling in Catford 1959-67, so obviously my recollections count for very little. but I can only say I never saw a Routemaster operated by Catford on the 54 on any day of the week, but obviously I wasn't around/ must have had my eyes closed on the various occasions where you claim to have experienced such a thing.

It was only in the last years of crew operation that RM's became common, 76-78.
