This is a request for information on how a British Citizen can obtain a National Insurance Number, which is essential for any job application.
I am very confused about this, as I have been given many conflicting pieces of information, such as "you have to get a job offer first", "the employer has to apply for it for you", "you have to get it first before getting a job".
Help from anyone who knows exactly how to get one (either from experience or from theory) will be much appreciated

You should have it after turning 16. I remember getting my N.I card in through the post. Other than that i think you'd have to get in touch with either you local authority or the Tax Office i'm afraid

Did you just receive the card one fine day in the post, or did you have to fill in a form?

Well, because i've always lived here i just got it straight through the post. What i suggest is possibly getting in touch with the Tax Office and see what they say as it's obviously more of their area than mine haha
