Guessing this is the best place for this. A Mr Daniel Plumb has created this rather nifty & useful little site which tracks London Buses as an iBus Controller style display. Haven't experienced any major flaws with it (although can't get "Vehicle Monitoring" feature to work). Can monitor up to 4 routes at once with refresh rates ranging between every 30s to 10m or never. That’s a brilliant piece of work and thanks for sharing. LVF is great, but if you don’t know a route it’s hard sometimes to work out where buses are if you’re looking at the whole route’s run-out. I’ve found that Vehicle Monitoring does work, but you can only enter a 5 digit fleet number - i.e. it’ll work to track a Stagecoach bus (not surprising as it’s written by someone who works for Stagecoach). My only niggle, and I hate to say it, is that it hasn’t kept up with recent service changes, so e.g. 55 doesn’t reach Walthamstow on the stops. Really minor stuff I know.

Works well, doesn't work on IE11, works on Edge and Google Chrome though.

Pretty nice tool.
A feature it would be nice to see is if you double click on a bus, it would be nice if it would bring up the bus's ETA timetable in a sort of LVF way, where it shows the bus stop and time predictions.

When I add EH171 or something on vehicle monitoring it doesn't work, and it doesn't allow to enter the plate number in full, nor can I just select a bus from the headway hmm?

Seems to be a random problem affecting certain buses randomly I've checked EH171 myself and it doesn't work-I'm guessing the reg isn't corresponding to the correct fleetcode in their database ie.their database has YY67UPX as EH971 by mistake so typing EH171 wouldn't show anything (example only)

Hi guys
Firstly I would like to thank you for your comments. I'm glad that you like the system even given its limitations. The project initially was a little "thing" for myself to observe routes at my garage (as someone identified above, I'm at Stagecoach London, Rainham). I then expanded it to all of the routes within SCL and then thought well I might as well make it an input field where you can enter *any* route.
Given that this thread was made in October there have been a fair few changes both in terms of code optimisation and UI changes since then. I have been working quite hard on it for the past week as I was considering releasing the system in public knowledge (that's when I stumbled on this thread!). So I thought it would be best to get it looking as professional as possible as well as catering for all routes within London.
I am working with another individual who is busy compiling a table-worth of data where we can match fleet numbers with registration numbers. For those of you who may have used TfL's API they only identify vehicles by a reg number; the fleet number is all done locally (hence why LVF requires inputting manually). Being a Stagecoach driver I have this information to hand hence why you will see most, if not all, Stagecoach buses with their respective fleet number. But, the key here is that the application was designed more for providing a visual overview of a route and any gaps in the service. As such, it's not entirely important whether you can just see a reg number or an actual fleet number.
Again I thank you for your comments and if you have any suggestions then I am definitely open to discussing them. I see mhv85 mentioned above about showing ETAs for upcoming stops when you hover over a vehicle. This is actually something I had in mind for ages and have never got round to doing it but I would like to do that some time soon.

Would it be possible to make it so that you could roughly know what headway the buses are actually on just like when you drive a bus on your MDT? To know actual headway from 1 to 7/8 bars. I mean right now you can look at the website and you can see even gaps between buses, you can sort of assume they are on good headway but that's about it, but would be nice to know what actual/roughly headway they are on whether it's 3 or 5 bars and so on...I think it won't be easy to create as there is different sort of PVR/frequency throughout the day.
But when you look at the headway on the website at say 11PM at night, you'll see like 2 buses on the tracker long distance apart so it's difficult to know what their actual headway is.
Appreciate all your work so far though.

Appreciate all your work so far though. I think that this is a great idea and is something I would love to implement. And there are two ways that this could work but neither would be feasible unfortunately. a) Sadly we are not provided the running number of a bus from TfL through their API. If we were, we could use this data to show you how early or late a vehicle is running by comparing it with its scheduled time from the schedules on TfL's website. This would be the ultimate way of making the application just like the real diagrams. b) We could constantly ping the API to get the arrival times of each bus for each stop in London and as you can imagine, that's simply unpractical; from a data storage perspective and server performance perspective (important if you guys want some semi-decent response times when using the system!) Moreover, I don't think TfL would be too pleased if I were making this number of requests . If this were the case though, we could see that LT1 arrived at Liverpool Street at 20:10 and then LT2 arrived at Liverpool Street at 20:22 on a scheduled 10 minute headway. Since LT2 arrived 2 minutes late (on headway-the key to remember here), we could express this as 1 whole headway + 1/5th of a headway. This corresponds to the diagram on a driver's MDT and would hence display as a "bar down from the middle". Conversely, if LT2 arrived at 20:18 this would be expressed as 4/5ths of a headway and displayed as a "bar up from the middle" (80% of the scheduled headway). Open to suggestions if anybody thinks there is another way round this!
