Whilst this restriction is put in place, there will still be loads of people travelling through the borough, like if you need to get from somewhere like Hayes to Twickenham, you're going to have to go through Feltham or Hounslow so it's going to be difficult to enforce.

They U-turned yesterday, advice is now to minimise travel into & out of Hounslow. It’s clear some politicians have no idea how London works - every borough is intertwined so proposing one borough to lockdown would never of worked. I mean are people expected to jump off the Piccadilly at Boston Manor and then take numerous buses to Harrington Corner to avoid Hounslow altogether.

It's not going to be enforced, it's just general advice. Heaven forbid that people should have to think for themselves.

Borough lockdowns, and even a London lockdown would never work in my opinion, people would just go somewhere else to go to the pub for instance if the pub in their area was closed. I do think that the spread of the Indian variant in the UK is mostly the government's fault, especially because Boris didn't shut the border quickly enough and the advice the government gives can be so vague sometimes.

Out of curiosity - why is”Chinese virus” racist but Spanish flu, Japanese encephalitis, U.K. variant, SA variant, Indian variant, Brazil variant not?

Probably because 'Chinese virus' isn't the name of the virus - just something that Donald Trump called it to blame China for the virus. The other terms you listed were official virus/variant names.

The other terms are not official names, the official name for the Indian variant for example is B.1.617.2. Its just that Indian variant is used as nobody can realistically remember all these numbers off the top of their head.

Exactly, the variants are unofficially named after the place they were identified, as China was the place where the original virus was identified, so using same naming convention, it is the Chinese virus.

Out of curiosity - why is”Chinese virus” racist but Spanish flu, Japanese encephalitis, U.K. variant, SA variant, Indian variant, Brazil variant not? ..because Spanish Flu was named in 1918 and time has moved on a bit since then. The fact members of the Chinese community have faced abuse because people called it the "Chinese virus" serves as another reminder that it is more appropriate to call it "Coronavirus." The variant names are just the same as a "Jerusalem Artichoke" or "Jersey Potato."

Whereas the first Covid-19 strain emerged in China so if it’s accurate to say Indian variant or Kent variant it is just as accurate to say Chinese variant. Not that I would condone attacks on that community but accuracy is accuracy.

I don't tend to need to be encouraged to avoid Hounslow. But in all seriousness, I do hope the vaccines help us all limit the impact of this latest variant.
