Thought I would create a thread to discuss the possible impact the virus could have on public transport.
If this does get worse it will start having a impact on travel and staff shortages, I wonder what plans TfL are drawing up? I wonder of they will scale back high frequency routes to maintain services across as many routes as possible or cancel smaller routes?
Must admit I would be a bit cautions about using the tube! Most shops have already sold out of hand sanitizers!
Hope this thread is OK and not trying to make light of the situation - Just wanted to discuss the transport side of thing.

If it gets that bad ... sure we would be on lock down like the infected Chinese cities

Coming home from work Saturday afternoon, I noticed a Reading Railair driver wearing a mask! That's the first instance I've seen of anyone outside of the Airport taking such measures.
I work inside T5, our office and restroom is in C block arrivals right next to gate C62. Quite often in the morning's, one of the 2 Hong Kong flights, usually comes in on this stand and we've had instances where staff refuse to leave the office whilst passengers are deboarding in fear catching something. We provide our colleagues with hand sanitizer and face masks for them to wear, should they wish and we only board flights from high risk areas after we've been given the go ahead from Public Health England.
Whilst I'll use the hand sanitizer, I don't bother with the face masks, I believe that there is a lot of scaremongering since the initial outbreak, with a lot of people now believing it is worse than it actually is.

There's been a few people in Brixton wearing the masks over the last two weeks or so - the masks are useless anyway as various virus experts have already pointed out yet people have apparently brought all the stocks with masks on Ebay priced at ridiculous amounts of money.

It's not uncommon for driver not to have a mask I saw one on the last day of the 214 under Metroline and I have seen the same driver ever since Go-Ahead took over also a tube driver!

I’ve noticed some national express airport services drivers blocking off the front row on coaches. They also don’t seem to be too keen to help with luggage as they usually do at Victoria. Can’t say I blame them really. If they do get ill the company won’t give a d*mn. So why should drivers?

They have a duty of care and I'm sure they don't want to end up short of drivers.

If 2 snowflakes crumple the network, then this would be pretty bad

As someone that used to work for national express stansted operation I can safely say they really don’t give a d*mn. One of the managers apparent response to a drivers question about what are the company doing to protect and prepare its staff for the Coronavirus. Reply? “We will just replace all our dead drivers with new recruits”. No word of a lie

No word of a lie Lawyers have said that employers have no choice but to count anyone off as an authorised absence due to either contracting the illness, having to care for someone like a child for example or even if they’ve had to self isolate as a precaution. This includes receiving sick pay so any company who doesn’t comply is going to have a bruising time from their workers with tribunals.

I cant see them shutting down the network simply due to money. Go Ahead are now providing big bottles of hand sanitizer in the main offices where drivers sign on, i have also read an email today stating drivers will be given small personal bottles tomorrow and should they run out they can refill them from the big bottle.

I have seen people wearing masks around 3 weeks ago on the tube and streets. The strange thing is hand sanitizer has been on the down low since around December last year. I always had clean practice washing hands etc So had a few bottles before, now just have to use them slowly.

The worst case scenario would be large scale services cut. If it gets to the scale of China or Italy then it would affect the bus network. Mainly because cleanliness is VERY poor on the Underground and buses. Buses are not cleaned properly enough imo. Some garages are better than others, others buses do not even get the floor mopped in weeks let alone windows cleaned. Grab rails and poles are well out of the question.
Drivers who have contracted would NOT be allowed to come in to work for obvious reasons. If someone willingly knew they had it and came in to work, they could face dismissal over infectious diseases; same with most companies. Attachment Deleted
