So this has been on my mind today. As I'm sure many know, there are mixed views about the Royals. There are those who love them and proud to have a monarchy, and those who don't and want the monarchy abolished (I'm 50/50 about all this), and that got me thinking. If the British monarchy was indeed abolished, who would be our head of state? What procedures would need to be taken and followed if this were to happen? And without public funding, how would the Royals support themselves if the monarchy were to be abolished? Let's see what everyone thinks

YES - we should abolish the monarchy. Something for the future however - not a priority atm.

However, in some countries that isn’t really the case. The Prime Minister is the head of government, and the head of state is usually a president rather than a monarchy. I believe this is the case in countries like Ireland & India. Bearing this in mind, would there be a “President of the United Kingdom” as our head of state rather than the prime minister having that title? And as the Queen is the head of the commonwealth, who would that title go to if the monarchy were to be abolished?

To be honest, I don't see the problem with the royal family at the moment. They don't really have any real power and their main purpose these days is as a tourist attraction. They also support numerous charitable causes so I think their benefits outweigh the cost in terms of public funds.
I would also hazard a guess that their contribution to the economy in terms of tourism outweighs the amount they take from the treasury.
Also worth bearing in mind that the Queen is not only a figurehead for the UK but also for the Commonwealth.

I agree - I mean the amount of people who come to Britain just to see the royal family probably does the job as many countries are fascinated by our royal family. The commonwealth point is a good one as well. The other issue is what benefits are there in abolishing the royal family - I mean everyone is finding it hard to come up with sorting out a system for just Megan & Harry without adding on the rest of the royals as well.
