Because of course Johnson never spaffed taxpayer's money up the wall when he was Mayor of London....

All very well and good but the Government could have stepped in with funding long before now - including when Johnson was Mayor, the problems with the bridge were known then. This is a blatant attempt at electioneering and at getting the Tory puppet Shaun Bailey into the public eye before next year's Mayoral election.

The repair and upkeep of a bridge should not be central governments responsibility. If the sticky plaster repairs of the past had instead done the job properly we would not be where we are today. Responsibility for this monumental cockup rests with H&F C and the GLA. Sorry, buck stops there ... years of mismanagement.

Both TfL and H&F council did nothing for so long and now the government is forced too. They’ve got what they want and they don’t lose face because it’s a win. Frankly H&F should have to meet a great deal of the cost because it was always their responsibility to maintain the bridge. If they authorised TfL to continue buses over the bridge it is on them.

[br Sadly, Johnson couldn't take control of a sheet of paper. But then again Kahn probably couldn't either. London deserves (much) better leadership.

If the coalition government didn’t roll out their austerity program in 2010, maybe Hammersmith & Fulham would of had enough money to repair the bridge given many councils had services stripped to the bare bones.

If the coalition government didn’t roll out their austerity program in 2010, maybe Hammersmith & Fulham would of had enough money to repair the bridge given many councils had services stripped to the bare bones. Funny how neighbouring Wandsworth found cash in 2014 to completely refurbish the much larger and more heavily used Putney Bridge. That fact is regardless of austerity the council chose to do nothing but patch it because they wanted someone else to bear the responsibility. They could have shared the responsibility with Richmond Council but again chose not to. Even then they could have asked the residents, amongst the richest in London, to help fund the repairs through a private initiative fundraiser. Likewise they could have supplemented funds through a section 106 levied on new housing in the borough. There were plenty of options available to them which have nothing to do with austerity.
