Eurostar is calling on the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, to offer support to Eurostar after it was announced that the UK's airports can access support of up to £8 million, depending on their business rates. Eurostar is struggling to stay in business, with passenger numbers down 95% since March due to the severe restrictions on international travel. Currently there is just one daily train each way between London and Paris, and one each way between London, Brussels and Amsterdam. Even allowing for 50% of capacity not being available due to social distancing, these trains still depart with many seats unsold. In the current English lockdown just 1% of the normal numbers are travelling. Eurostar is looking for similar assistance to that currently being given to the airline industry, as well as a review of its track access charges for using the HS1 line between London St Pancras International and the Channel Tunnel. It is calling on the Government to back what it calls "the green gateway to Europe". www.theguardian.com/business/2020/nov/25/eurostar-calls-on-uk-for-urgent-support-as-it-fights-for-survival

Eurostar bookings are recovering following the easing of restrictions. Bookings between 4-14 August were double those of the previous two weeks, and 39 additional trains are being operated during August. Demand is especially high over the weekend of 27-31 August. 83% of travel is for leisure purposes.
From 6th September Eurostar will increase its scheduled daily service to eight trains each way; five between London and Paris, and three between London and Brussels with one continuing to/from Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Eurostar's CEO Jacques Damas is calling for a new air travel tax on flights in Northern Europe, with the money being used to support Eurostar services between the UK and mainland Europe.

This is good. I’m hoping conditions next summer will allow me to take advantage of a nice trip to France via Eurostar

Eurostar not stopping at Ebbsfleet or Ashford until next year. That’s ok - Ebbsfleet isn’t much of a holiday for me 😂

Eurostar will be resuming a ski train service to the French Alps, possibly from mid-December. The train will leave London on a Friday evening and operate overnight to Moutiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice, returning as a daytime service on the Saturday. The service will operate as a charter train for the travel company Travelski, a subsidiary of the French resort and theme park operator CDA (Compagnie des Alpes) which is essentially taking the financial risk by chartering the train. Tickets will not be available from Eurostar or other rail outlets, and will only be sold by Travelski as part of a package for resorts managed by CDA. www.theguardian.com/business/2021/sep/17/ski-trains-to-resume-between-london-and-the-french-alps

Eurostar will no longer convey local passengers between Amsterdam/Rotterdam and Brussels. This will speed up services towards London as there will no longer need to be a "security sweep" at Brussels Midi, all passengers joining the train at Amsterdam and Rotterdam will be for London and will have undergone the full security screening required for transiting the Channel Tunnel.
Eurostar and Thalys services have now been combined into a single organisation (with SNCF - French Railways - being the largest shareholder) and Thalys operates several trains a day between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Brussels so there is no need for these passengers to be conveyed on Eurostar trains.

Eurostar will not need to suspend its Amsterdam service during renovation work at Amsterdam Centraal, as had been feared previously. NS (Netherlands Railways) has identified an underused undercroft area which can be adapted for Eurostar passengers, and will house a new terminal area with passport control and a lounge area. Passengers will have direct access to the trains. Longer term, there is a proposal to expand the station at Amsterdam-Zuid, to the south of the city, and Eurostar and other international services could be moved there from Centraal. Zuid is linked to the centre of Amsterdam by Metro lines M51 and M52 as well as tram line 5.

Although Eurostar is not operating its Winter trains to ski resorts this year, it is offering through bookings with connecting services at Lille-Europe.
Dubbed "Eurostar Snow", the through tickets (from £99 one-way) will be available for eight weekends from 16th December. Tickets will go on sale from 31st August.
====================================================
Due to the Air Traffic Control problems and high level of flight cancellations, Eurostar added an extra 15.01 London-Paris and 20.36 Paris-London train to its schedule on Tuesday 29th August. Stations and trains are very busy and people are asked not to go to stations unless they have a ticket to travel.

I wonder if Brexit didn’t happen and the UK was in Schengen what additional routes we would see go through the tunnel?

I wonder if Brexit didn’t happen and the UK was in Schengen what additional routes we would see go through the tunnel? A service from London to Köln (Cologne) and Frankfurt for a start. Daily services from London to Barcelona and Milano, avoiding the need to change stations in Paris. Direct services from Edinburgh to Paris. If the UK had been really visionary we could have linked Heathrow Airport into HS1 and operated direct trains to Europe from there, reducing the number of short-haul connecting flights. Passengers would be able to include a train connection with their flight booking.

Who on earth would even use a train for such excessive distances? Would they even be commercially viable? Milan and Barca are both only 2 hours by plane but could take well over 6 hours by train. Paris and Brussells I understand the rationale for the train, but most other European cities make no sense.

European airports have been chaotic all Summer. I would be only too happy to travel from London to Barcelona or Milan on a direct train.
