The new London Overground timetables mainly on the North London line finally has 95% of the uneven headways gone. At times there were 20 mins, 25 mins and even 30 mins at various times of the day amongst a set of 8 mins headways. there was one where it was 8 then 4 mins headway then 27 mins; crazy. tfl.gov.uk/modes/london-overground/london-overground-timetables

Appreciate that there's a lot more to consider compared to the tube, with freight paths et al, but still... Glad it has changed.

Silverlink was really that bad huh? Yup and if memory serves me right the Noth London Line was about 20mins during the day (including during the peaks) with many cancelled trains.

I remember it in the early 2000s being Every 22 minutes on the NLL and towards the end of Silverlink days in 2007 i think it was every 15 minutes Stratford to Richmond and 30 minutes to North Woolwich then 20 minutes throughout after about 19:00 and on weekends giving a more frequent service if you lived in North Woolwich in the evenings , also remember being repeatedly delayed for about 5 minutes on an already late train at Highbury and Islington as the 3 car 313 was just too packed and the doors couldn't close 😂 either way services now are a dream away from the 2000s .

Done a bit of digging on the old way back machine and managed to find an old timetable from 2001 amazing to see how far the route has come in twenty years it's crazy how quick it's gone ... web.archive.org/web/20011105013101fw_/http://www.silverlink-trains.com/timetable/richnwool/richnwoolich1.htm

And glad to see that they have managed to achieve an objective around more/all trains stopping at Silver street to/from Cheshunt, including in peak hours.

Also had slam train doors with small compartments, totally unsuited the numbers of passengers even then. Short trains with people running up the platform, delayed and cancelled trains were only too common. It really was a case of being thankful if there was anything that resembled a train service.

I don't remember the slam door trains they had I only remember the 313s. And there was hardly any staff at stations

I used it quite regularly in the early-mid 2000s and it was pretty grim. But to be able to get round London on a zone 2/3 travelcard, which back then was perhaps 10-15% more expensive than the equivalent bus-only season ticket, I suffered it with a sort of gritty determination. www.flickr.com/photos/nicohogg/sets/72157594559110460The Gospel Oak to Barking service ran within sight of my old flat in Tottenham so I got to see the purring 117s replaced by 150s. For many years the evening service was a single unit doing rounders on a 90 minute headway until giving up just before 10pm and going home (which I think was Bletchley for a long time!). Silverlink's awareness of their own shortcomings was laid bare in a poster at each station suggesting alternative routes to other stations along the line in the event of the service falling over. The rush hour overcrowding by the mid noughties was endemic - the design of the units was totally unsuited to crush loads and people circulating on and off at every station (vs trains into termini which just load to bursting then empty out in one hit). It was common to see excess passengers in the guards area at the back arriving to or leaving Highbury. The 378s are much better in this respect.

Lovely photos and absolutely love the captions 😂 exactly how I remember it captures the mood of how it was perfectly , I kind of miss the unloved state of the lines in a strange way but amazing to see how far it has come and scary how quick it has seems to have gone literally seems like yesterday but yes the Overground now is in a completely different league to how it was then .
