A major project is taking place over the next nine days, the creation of a new underpass at Werrington Junction north of Peterborough. This will enable freight trains and local services towards Spalding and Sleaford to keep clear of fast-moving express trains on the East Coast Main Line whilst negotiating the junction. Rather than use traditions tunneling methods which would mean extended closures, an innovative method is being used whereby a curved concrete box has been constructed next to the worksite. Over the next nine days this will be inched into place at the rate of 1.5m per hour underneath the tracks it is to pass under. The remaining tracks will be available for a limited LNER service to operate between Grantham and London King's Cross. Services will be further affected over the weekends of 16/17 and 23/24 January when the line will be closed between Peterborough and Hitchin, the limited LNER service will be diverted via Cambridge.
