As we’re approaching the start date of Tranche 2, news on what will happen regarding vehicles has started to trickle through. Due to vehicle delays at ADL, the vehicles ordered by Stagecoach and TfGM, BYDs by TfGM and E400s by Stagecoach, will not all arrive on time so Stagecoach are loaning vehicles from Go North West. AFAIK, this includes the Scania’s currently at Heywood and B9TL G1s at Queens Road. More vehicles may be included but I’m not sure what else will be. The Scania’s at Heywood will be replaced by B5LH G2s released from Oxford. Stagecoach Manchester are also due E40Hs from Stagecoach North East and the first of which was spotted at Gilmoss in Liverpool last month for repainting.

A report by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), published on 23rd February, notes that the rollout of Tranche 2 is benefiting from "several lessons learned" from the rollout of Tranche 1. Driver training and the fitting of ticket machines has been started much earlier. Stagecoach, First and Rotala will not be using any agency drivers, although Stagecoach will second around 80 drivers, engineers and supervisors from elsewhere in the group to mitigate the loss of staff who do not transfer over on March 24th. Stagecoach has also seconded 60 drivers from Go North West and First, whose Queens Road and Oldham depots it will take responsibility for, to allow driver training to go ahead. First and Rotala have confirmed to GMCA that they will not need to second any staff from elsewhere. Vehicle-wise, 50 new BYD 8URR/ADL Enviro400 City EV were due in January for Oldham Depot but were delayed due to strike action at ADL. Stagecoach expects to have around half available for service on 24th March and has sourced 30 second-hand EuroVI vehicles to make up the shortfall. Oldham Depot will be commissioned for electric vehicles a week before the changeover. GMCA has now purchased Queens Road and Oldham depots from Go North West and First Manchester respectively. Finally, GMCA has authorised the draw-down £20.8 million City Region Sustainable Transport funding for the purchase of a further 94 zero-emission vehicles, to be operated by contracted operators in Tranches 1 and 2. www.route-one.net/news/manchester-franchising-tranche-two-rollout-prep-proceeding-to-plan/

As the mobilization date of Tranche 2 comes nearer, some of the 82 E400MMCs ordered by Stagecoach have been sighted in Falkirk. This is separate to the 50 vehicle BYD order made by TfGM). Image here from this post here. Interestingly, Stagecoach have decided to Lazzerini seats rather than the ADL Smart Seats seen on the TfGM vehicles or the 30 new E400MMCs that arrived for Stagecoach Manchester last year.

The 30 MMCs delivered last year were part of the mass order of standard specification buses that have been allocated around the Stagecoach group.

I was just surprised at the choice of seats given the TfGM ordered BYDs, the Rotala and GNW ordered E200s as well as Stagecoach's own national order all use the Smart Seat. In other news, some of the 16reg MMCs at Hyde Road have had Bee Network stickers applied to them as well as the 69reg and most of the 20reg at Stockport having been painted yellow with the interior's changed slightly too. Poles have been repainted yellow but the seats are still the standard Stagecoach grey and blue leather with yellow priority seat lables on certain seats.

How does the allocation of TfGM-ordered vehicles work out with other vehicles still being ordered by operators themselves. Is it a bit like how LTs are allocated out here in London (barring the route vs. sector franchising difference)?

It looks like at Oldham, they seem to have implemented charging in a similar way to what First Leicester have done, just inside instead of outside. The chargers seem to be suspended from the ceiling and the cables trail down towards the bus as shown in the photo. This was posted on the Bee Network Facebook page here by Michael Stansfield on that page. You can see just behind and to the right of the BYD on the left, a cable coming down from roof that is plugged into the vehicle.

I presume it is like the LTs and they choose the routes at the particular garage that the electrics will operate on.

TfGM are also renumbering some of the Wigan routes back into the 600 series from 7th April as well, of which most of them got renumbered to low numbers by Stagecoach when they operated Wigan depot for about 10 years before being moved to Go North West Bee Network last September. I agree that renumbering the routes in this case is a sensible idea especially in a regulated/integrated environment.

The Tranche 3 announcement date has been delayed from tomorrow until further notice. Notices have been posted on all the Tranche 3 depots.
The rumours going around Stagecoach garages allegedly are that Stagecoach have won Stockport and ComfortDelGro have won 3 other franchises.

Allegedly the delay is linked to a legal challenge from a bidder. Interesting....
