That's quite something! I was half expecting First to win a small franchise. I suspect there will be significant disappointment they've only ended up with Rochdale as I know they were going hell for leather for tranche 3.

I know that SME participation is a real concern in West Yorkshire so I wonder if some smaller franchises will be ringfenced specifically for SME operators, or if there will be some way of protecting their level of work? I bet Stagecoach are pleased to hold on to Stockport given their investment in EVs there.

Hyde Road has around 200 vehicles, Stockport is getting the 170 Volvo BZLs ordered a while back, Sharston around 150, Wythenshawe around 40 vehicles and Tameside around 80. The small franchises are usually single digit to 15 vehicles each IIRC. Here is a list of the routes as were originally in the franchise documents in 2020 for all three tranches. Some routes have since changed. EDIT: Additionally, according to routeone.net

The only SME involvement in the whole Bee Network is Vision Bus winning a school bus contract in Tranche 1. Hopefully the SMEs manage to win most of the Tranche 3 school bus contracts.

Some of Metroline's vehicles will be a share of the 350 BYD/ADL Enviro400 City EV that TfGM are obtaining directly. Stagecoach may be prepared to drive a hard bargain on their assets; as part of Tranche 1 Rotala sold its Bolton Depot to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (it is now leased to Go North West) and also sold 134 vehicles directly to Go North West. Rotala made a total of £30.4 million on assets that had an estimated book value of £23 million.

Yes, and there is also a role for smaller established operators, if the will is there to make it work.

Metroline will have a good number of VWs, TEs and DEs becoming spare from London soon which could contribute in Manchester?

One thing to bear in mind is that while Metroline has won a lot of the Stagecoach's work in South Manchester, they are due to take over Arriva North West Wythenshawe depot that predominantly run routes in Altrincham area as well as part of the Wythenshawe large franchise though one big difference is that Arriva have decided not to bid any of the franchises in Manchester including Wythenshawe and their Bolton depot which Diamond is now using with most of the ex Arriva Bolton routes gone over to Go North West last year. In terms of the buses Metroline will use, they are going to be so many possibilities on that and that will depend on whether Stagecoach does the current fleet used by the depots Metroline will take over. I wouldn't be surprised if Stagecoach sends most of their buses, especially their E400 MMC fleet on the Bee Network work they got in Tranche 2 or outside of Greater Manchester to replace the older buses at other Stagecoach divisions.
