Freight trains in London: a new report

"The London Rail Freight Strategy - options for the future" has just been published by Network Rail. The report looks at the freight train flows through the London area, the challenges these pose, and suggested improvements that could increase capacity for both freight and passenger services which share busy corridors and whose needs often conflict with each other.
Some suggestions are:
- reinstating a third track at Camden Road station
- moving and realigning Kensal Green Junction to allow faster crossing speeds
- extending AC electrification to Shepherd's Bush; this would enable passenger trains to change over power supply when they are already stopped for passengers and increase line capacity.
- additional platform 0 at at the north end of Clapham Junction to cope with an increased West London Line service, this would leave platform 17 clear for freight services to proceed through.
- Reducing headways and increasing capacity on the North London, West London and Goblin lines.
