The Department of Transport confirmed that a £69million programme of improvements for Oxford Station and its rail approaches will commence next year. The investment will pave the way for the creation of a new track and platform adjacent to the current platform 4, creating a new island platform on the west side of the station by 2024 for new services such as East-West Rail. There will also be a new Station entrance next to Botley Road, giving easier access for residents living to the west of the Station. As part of the work the Botley Road bridge will be replaced and the road lowered to allow the passage of standard-height double deck buses. A four-metre wide cycle and footpath will be installed on each side of the roadway. North of Oxford the level crossings at Sandy Lane and Yarnton Lane will be closed, and three high-speed rail crossovers will be installed at Oxford North Junction. These will improve line safety and allow for faster and more frequent passengers and freight services - the route through Oxford is a key strategic route for freight and up to twelve additional trains per day could be accommodated. www.networkrail.co.uk/news/boost-to-oxford-rail-travel-following-69m-funding-confirmation/
