It’s barbaric and just one of the many ways maritime law lets down workers across the world. Discusting behaviour from the top brass I hope the workers keep standing their ground It is not just what you are trying to achieve that matters but how you go about it. No one says that P&O shouldn't be profitable but the manner in which they have gone about this is so unacceptable :- - Replacing your long standing staff with agency workers
- Effectively sacking 800 staff on the spot with no notice, no consultation
- The manner of the sacking
- Planning this in secrecy from everyone
- Complete disregard for your customers (those who had planned to travel with P&O and now cannot do so as no ferries are running)
To quote the old phrase it is the 'unacceptable face of capitalism'. There surely must have been a better way to deal with P&O's problems, and if the management can't see such a way, dare I say perhaps they are the wrong management. I have no idea if this is within employment law, I'll leave the lawyers to answer that one.
