Hello all
This is something very close to me and I thought I would create a thread to raise awareness for autism. For me growing up as a kid it felt as though it was a taboo to have autism as many people in the world was not educated and well informed about how autism comes in different forms in their unique way. I'm glad more and more people are being aware about this. For anyone on here that knows anyone that has autism or has autism. What are the challenges you face and things you are happy about?

It is also a concept that is relatively modern, people of my generation will never have heard of autism as a child, it simply didn’t exist as terminology. Autistic spectrum didn’t exist until 1994 and it was just one thing before that (basically child is bit withdrawn in social interaction).
So although I think there is quite a lot of general awareness nowadays, unless you have a close relative or work colleague that explains the effect of their particular type then most people don’t really understand it, and if you know two or more with different types it can be quite confusing as it is natural to tend to think what affects one will also affect the other. I don’t want that to sound wrong but the taboo or not talking about it just continues the not really understanding even if you try to know.

Unfortunately there's a lot of misconceptions about it where some feel as though it's a one size fits all type of thing when in reality it's not the case
