Read somewhere (probably somewhat biased) that the ULEZ also ran a death knell Although admittedly the Greenwich store is well inside the ULEZ Oh well, another glitzy set of apartment blocks will come up. Hopefully they use IKEA furniture

Hopefully they use IKEA furniture Quite a messed up business model, closing the "flagship store"... perhaps they want to be the Tesla of flat-packed furniture with glitzy showrooms and you order from a catalogue. Which means you might as well look on their website rather than go to a tiny shop in Oxford Street or Hammersmith The store at Tottenham is always busy, with no set time to close it might be a weird way of marketing to get more to go to the shop (good luck getting through the roadworks on Glover Drive, the 341 and 192 struggle to park there)... I think it might be like House of Frasers "closure" in Lakeside a couple of years ago (still open!) as a way to drum up business. With Meridian Water housing estate under construction and addition of new train station within the last couple of years, I think there's more chance of Will Smith being invited to Chris Rock's 58th birthday party than IKEA being foolish enough to leave Northeast London with no viable branch except Thurrock

Prior to learning / driving a car used to be our go-to ikea (Greenwich hadn’t opened yet) when we were still on the IoD. Outbound journey used to be a schlep - dlr to bank, northern to Euston, Victoria to Tottenham Hale and then the 192 OR dlr to Stratford, overground to Highbury and Islington, Victoria to Tottenham Hale and then the 192. Home bound journeys used to be boarding the 341 with a bunch of potted plants post 10pm (one journey was that as my wife loves them - I can’t tell one from the other) or mercifully with only enough stuff to clamber upstairs to get the front seats. So the 341 till balls pond road and then the 277 to isle of dogs with a short walk home (when the 277 still used to go to H&I). Last time we did this was on the unfortunate day when the London Bridge terrorist attack happened - I remember following breaking news while holding on to a bunch of potted plants on the 277 which got stuck in some god-awful traffic near Victoria park Nowadays it’s a quick (traffic willing) hop down the A2/A102

It’s an intention to close but they could be swayed quite easily into keeping it open.

Every bit of free space seems to be being built on in London! They want to focus on small stores and I imagine the old Top Shop in Oxford Street will become the new flagship store.
From the press release I would shocked if this don't go ahead.
------
The proposal to close the Tottenham store follows an extensive assessment of IKEA UK’s presence in London in line with changing shopping behaviours. Last year, online represented almost half of the retailers’ total sales and the demand for different services as well as convenient deliveries accelerated. This, combined with the redevelopment of the area where the store is located, prompted the retailer to assess the long-term viability of the site.
IKEA UK will now enter a period of collective consultation with the 450 co-workers affected by this proposal and is committed to retaining as many as possible. The business will create over 600 vacancies in London before the proposed store closure, which as a priority will be offered to the affected co-workers.

They were very proud of it being built with public transport in mind.

This might reduce the instances of route 192 buses heaving in the area.

My understanding, from press releases, is the Oxford Street store is expected to be like a design hub. So one wouldn’t buy large furniture like sofas or bookcases but rather see designs, plans rooms with staff and order larger furniture. They will have the normal marketplace ikea stuff like plates, cups, saucepans etc and mostly importantly a cafe serving food. It will definitely be an upgrade on what they have in Hammersmith now but with a similar design studio and collection point that they used to have in Stratford

Parking at IKEA Greenwich is about to get even more competitive, with all the displaced customers from north London.
