What a result.
It was no surprise that Labour regained Wakefield; the conservatives were defending a small majority and the seat should have been Labour's for the taking.
Tiverton & Honiton though - although the Liberal Democrats were thought to be in with a chance, the size of the swing at 30% was absolutely gobsmacking. This is now effectively a safe LibDem seat. The swing to the LibDems is even greater than previous stunning byelection results in Chesham & Amersham in 2021 (25%) and Orpington in 1962 (22%). It is clear that Labour supporters lent their vote to the LibDems, their share of the vote went from nearly 20% in 2019 to less than 4%.
The new MP for Tiverton & Honiton is Richard Foord. The conservative candidate, Helen Hurford, refused to be interviewed at the count and left when the result was declared without speaking to anybody.
Following the two byelection defeats, Oliver Dowden has resigned as conservative party chair.

The looming victory was so obvious, the LibDems were declaring a win an hour before vote counting ended. I think Hurford had really struggled with the strength of feeling against the current government and its leadership. At the end her heart was no longer in it.

She wasn’t helped by her team insisting no one from the media could speak to her unlike Foord who was readily available and willing to talk

52.3% turnout compared to 71.9% in 2019. turnout for by-elections is nearly always lower than general elections. Even with a reduced turnout it still represents a significant gains for the Lib Dems

The results of the two by elections demonstrate how an informal pact between Labour and the Lib Dems could work quite effectively to oust the Tories. These results seem a far cry from just over a year ago when Labour lost Hartlepool and Starmer looking about as useful as a chocolate teapot. I think his currently strategy of hoping to win by being the least worse alternative to the Tories has its limitations as if Johnson is replaced by someone competent there could easily be a reset that pushes Starmer onto the backfoot once more.

Boris Johnson needs to do the decent thing and just resign. Personally I would give the Conservative party a chance between now and the next election if they had a new leader. The country is a utter mess at the moment and seems to be getting worse.

The problem the Tories have and why many are resisting changing Boris is there is no competent person within the Tories to take over so even with Starmers own limitations, he should still look better (even if not by loads) than whoever the Tories put forward

As far as I am aware stayed pretty clear of any controversy.

This swing is similar to their best in the 1992 Parliament - 35% at Christchurch in 1993.
Conversely, the swing to Labour at Wakefield at 13% is more modest than their 29% swing in Dudley West in 1994. People now seem to find Labour a safe but uninviting alternative.

The country is a utter mess at the moment and seems to be getting worse. Like the 318s, he will be around for another 2 years at least, he's looking a state as well. The public school kids are thriving off "Disaster Capitalism" where they make a packet when something bad happens, they don't really care about all the strikes, Covid numbers are creeping up and Bojo hasn't ruled out another Lockdown, cue making a packet on more bogus vaccines... apart from the shrill Angela Rayner Labour don't have much to offer in terms of alternative (a lot of their MPs were on the picket lines). Nutjob Liz Truss now wants to pick a fight with China over Taiwan and there's the threat of being dragged into fighting Russia with NATO. This is like Man City or Chelsea fielding a weak team in the Carabao Cup, let the kids have a run about against some non league outfit. Boris can appear to look good, keeping TfL on the ventilator whilst not solving the issue at the chronic waste in the organisation. Another MP in sleaze yesterday, but they just moved him to the back benches, perhaps they didn't feel like losing another by election
