Already reported on another thread, but I though I would start one exclusively for the ADL Enviro400 City and BYD/ADL Enviro400 EV City.
Northcord Model Company will soon be commencing work on new castings of the Enviro400 City body style, following on from their highly successful ADL Enviro400 MMC castings.
The City castings will be in the UKBUS6800 Range and initially there will be two castings:
1 - 10.8 metre 1 & 2 door BYD/ADL Enviro400EV City
2 - 10.9 metre 1 & 2 door ADL Enviro400 City Trident 2-chassised (to follow as a continuation of the previous Enviro400 MMC Licence Agreement)
Further variants, including the shorter versions of the above, will be announced later.
The Enviro400 City was initially envisaged by ADL as a London product, and took styling cues from the New Routemaster including the curved front and rear domes and glazed staircase. Arriva London took the first London vehicles for route 78 at Ash Grove Garage at the end of 2015, and the following year two batches arrived at CT Plus (now HCT Group) for routes 26 and 388 - from the same garage! (it is shared by the two operators.
Although the City was not particularly popular in London - most operators stuck with the cheaper MMC style for new diesel and hybrid double-deckers - the surprise was its take-up by non-London operators keen to purchase a more distinctive-looking product. Blackpool Transport - still municipally owned - has taken several batches. Even the Sussex-based independent Southern Transit has invested in two to an upmarket specification, spotting a niche for comfortable vehicles capable of moving large numbers of people over short distances which di not necessarily require a full-specification coach.
For alternative-fuel vehicles, ADL has made the City available as it is an easier body to adapt, being more bespoke. Reading Buses and Nottingham City Transport have taken several CNG-powered examples, whilst the BYD and ADL collaboration, the Enviro400EV City, is becoming a familiar sight in London and other towns and cities up and down the UK. ADL now shows flexibility when it comes to glazed staircases, and nowadays both the City and the MMC can be specified either with or without. And ADL is not to be left behind in the Hydrogen field, having recently unveiled their ADL Enviro400FCEV City Hydrogen Fuel Cell demonstrator.
