As we all know, today is the Spring Bank Holiday. People have different feelings about Bank Holidays. Some people like them, whether just for an extra day off or for a special event being laid on. Other people wish the Bank Holidays did not exist, but that they could have the days added to their annual leave for them to take off work in their own time. On the whole I love Bank Holidays for having a different character from ordinary days, and for good measure giving the year more structure. The Spring Bank Holiday has the distinction of being the lightest Bank Holiday of the year! My Spring Bank Holiday and August Bank Holiday will be entirely different this year. Today I am working a half day and am of course here now. For the August Bank Holiday I have the day off (and have never worked an August Bank Holiday in my life anyway! ). I shall then be suspending my transport interest and concentrating on a musical theme with a poignant reminder of my friend Becki, who I found out a couple of years ago had died on August 28th 2019. On a happier note, I am listening to 2 radio shows of interest from 6am to 2pm. By working this afternoon I have maximised other people's opportunities to have a full day off. I can then have a takeaway Kebab after I finish work at 6.45pm. I disagree with having normal Mon-Fri tv on Bank Holidays. I am therefore avoiding Good Morning Britain and the soaps today. Bank Holidays feel more natural as days out to sample Sunday bus services than Sundays. I therefore rode my SEe on route 357 on Easter Monday. (It was a late change of plan to come south early additionally to ride some Arriva buses just north of London that Sunday). How do you find Bank Holidays? Feel free to comment.

I do like my bank holidays as it gives me a chance to relax and rest for the week ahead. This month's Bank Holiday being unique in that we managed to get 3 bank Holidays when it's usually two in May. P.S this is the penultimate bank holiday Monday where TH buses are on the 157. The last bank holiday will be on the 28th August and after that it will be no more.

I think Easter Sunday should be fixed to fall on the first Sunday in April. Then the first Monday of every month from May until September should be a Bank Holiday - this means that Spring Bank Holiday would move from the end of May to the beginning of June, the Late Summer Bank Holiday would move from the end of August to the beginning of September, and there would be two additional Bank Holidays at the beginning of July and the beginning of August.

Bank holidays were first defined for me I guess because it was simply an extra day off school and a chance to go on the buses. Then they became a way of earning extra money if I worked them. Now I don’t get paid any extra for them so always try and get them off. However one bank holiday I never get off is the one in August because of a certain event in West London.
Bus wise, I actually dislike them because they’re a busier Sunday and with Sunday services , no MonSat services out, I find it not enjoyable to spend a BH on buses anymore.
Especially back in the day when operators were replacing double decks with minibuses on Sundays and BH. Horrible... I remember practically all routes in Hammersmith were mini buses on Sundays once, apart from the 10 & 266.

I have been pretty lucky having jobs that mean I get Bank Holidays off apart from when I worked for a 247 print company for 3 years. I like the extra day off but wish they were more spaced out during the year!

I know you probably didn't mean this, but it's quite offensive wanting Easter moved. It's quite a holy time for many Christians and is determined by the position of the moon and when it was believed the Easter miracle happened. Tends to also coincide with the 40 days of fasting for Lent. You'd not want Ramadan, Diwali or Hannukah moved. Why should Easter be moved?

Also adding bank holidays would cost the economy billions every summer and really affect productivity in businesses across the nation as people would choose to tie it to holidays. Be grateful we aren’t like most of the world and have bank holidays on Mondays only. Everywhere else they hold it on the day it falls. If Mayday fell on a Wednesday that’s the holiday, likewise if it fell on a Saturday/Sunday then there is no replacement day. So a lot of countries might get more days on paper but there is always a chance of a lower physical count.

I think there are too many bank holidays, especially in April and May. The job that I do is very seasonal with a lot more work in the summer than the winter however this year I have yet to work a bank holiday. I do prefer to work to gain a bit more money however today I have stuff to do so I don't mind being off. I don't like moving bank holidays like last year where the 30th should have been a bank holiday instead of 2-3 June. Bank holidays on days excluding Monday with the exception of Good Friday and Christmas feel weird

The subject of "fixing" Easter, or at least date reform, comes up quite regularly. The World Council of Churches discussed it in 1997. However it did not have the support of the Eastern Orthodox Churches (who celebrate Easter on a different date to Western churches). It was discussed again at Papal level in 2015-2016. Many scholars attribute a high level of probability that Jesus' crucifixion took place on Friday 7th April 30AD so there is a case here for fixing Easter as the Sunday closest to 9th April. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reform_of_the_date_of_Easter

There's no reason why a Bank Holiday could not be on the following Monday in lieu of a weekend day - after all, we do it for Christmas and New Year. That said, I am happy for the UK to have a Bank Holiday on the first Monday in May rather than on 1st May.

No, but that would be a coincidental outcome and the discussion was about Bank Holidays to start with.
