In a written response to Caroline Pidgeon LAM, The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has indicated that he supports the construction of a new rail link south-west from Heathrow Terminal 5, and suggests there may be progress on getting the long-proposed link off the ground. The lobbying group Heathrow Southern Railway are proposing a partially-tunneled segregated route which would join the existing line just north of Virginia Water. This would bypass many of the level crossings which have prevented previous schemes from getting started. A large part of the cost would actually be a new station at Heathrow Airport - fortunately the station at Terminal 5 was designed and built with two extra platforms for future rail links and these are still available. If built, journey times from Terminal 5 will be around 20 minutes to Woking, 30 minutes to Guildford and just six minutes to Staines via a curve to the Windsor line. At present, just one-fifth of people travelling between Heathrow Airport and the area to its south-west use public transport. www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/mayor-supports-southern-rail-link-to-heathrow-airport-65511/
