The Chancellor's Autumn Statement includes a commitment of £2 billion to support the development and manufacture of zero-emission vehicles. The Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) says that it intends to lobby Government to ensure a substantial proportion of that funding goes to accelerate the transotion of buses and coaches to zero-emission. The Statement also mentions Government reforms to the planning system, aimed at accelerating grid connections for new projects. CPT says this is relevant to transport operators looking to invest in electric charging infrastructure. £50 million has been pledged to boost apprenticeships in engineering and other key sectors; CPT intends to advocate that the bus and coach industry be included in the scheme. Further transport-related items are £2.5 billion towards a mass-transit system for West Yorkshire. £23 million is also availble for a bus rapid transit between Woolwich and Thamesmead, this is part of a larger £150m allocation to London from the Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land Fund and is to support new housing development. Lastly, devolution deals have been agreed for Greater Lincolnshire, Hull & East Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cornwall which could lead to transport solutions in those areas becoming more region-specific. www.route-one.net/bus/autumn-statement-cautiously-welcomed-by-industry/
