TfL's board documents have mentioned they want to enable cross-device charging which solves this issue...
But potentially creates another... as I know some (and have seen some) who'll use this quirk when travelling with someone who doesn't have a means of payment of their own -- particularly teens too old to travel for free, but who won't have their own debit card quite yet. Speaking of which, it's a shame TfL underpromotes the 11-15 discount that can be applied to Visitor Oyster cards (which in itself is a hurdle as they can't be bought in London iirc).

Oddly was thinking about this the other day. If I tap in using my bank card and then tap in using the same account but via my phone (for someone else), does that mean I get charged twice or does the second become the hopper free fare. I think that is what you are saying? |

This reminds me of a mishap I had last week. I was deep in thought and went onto a DLR platform and after a few minutes couldn’t think if I had tapped in! I didn’t want to risk it so tapped out then tapped in again and then one more time! I tapped out as normal at my exit station and was charged the correct fare.

I think that is what you are saying? Two different devices = two different journeys. No hopper. At the moment, TfL has no idea that your phone and card are under the same account when you tap in or out. |
