The Times, they are a'-changing ....
What was until recently a staple of Britain's railway network - the coal train - is about to become extinct. Those of us old enough will remember the "Merry-go-round" coal trains of the 1970s and 1980s, around the Midlands and North delivering continual trainloads of coal to the ever-hungry power stations. However these power stations have been gradually closed down and the scheduled GB Railfreight train on Friday 28th June will deliver the last trainload of coal to Britain's last coal-fired power station at Ratcliffe, Nottinghamshire.
Ratcliffe Power Station itself will be closed down in September. The distinctive cooling towers and associated structures will be decommissioned and then demolished, and the site will be redeveloped as a zero-carbon technology and energy hub.
GB Railfreight will name one of its class 66/7 locomotives as a tribute to the power station.

Also, I'm personally relieved to hear that transporting coal in the UK will soon be a thing of the past, as I think that we should go for more green sources such as solar or nuclear, like France.

Yes, that's the one. I drove past it last year and was surprised to see the piles of coal. I absolutely agree that we should focus on renewables now, and invest in the capacity to produce as much of our own green energy as possible.

Ratcliffe Power Station will cease generating at midnight tonight, Monday 30th September 2024. The UK will become the first major economy to cease using coal as a source of power generation.
The change has become possible due not only to the development of renewable energy, in which the UK is a major player, but also the increasing efficiency of electrical devices such as the use of LED lighting.

It would have been fitting if it was been hauled by a steam engined coal powered train
