Not a fan of diverting bus routes away to pedestrianise a street, hope they get the balance right but Camden’s response worries me and sounds just like Lambeth - no actual care for buses.

Whilst it can work as it has along Bayhem Street for decades now, it can be suicidal for the bus network if its moved too far from the centre or worse still they end up caught up in traffic. |

Hmmm, as someone who sometimes uses Camden High Street as an interchange/quick visit in principle I wouldn’t mind this alongside the underground entrance/exit area as that can be quite cramped at times. Usual fear of traffic elsewhere and bus network changes in longrun though. Devil in the details here.

It may also have little impact on the buses as a) it is only a one-way system that is being moved b) no bus stops will be missed most likely c) bus stops could be gained for diverted routes. |

I agree, the pavements are just inadequate for the volume of people at times and I'm surprised this wasn't done long ago, there will be minimal disruption to bus routes so I can’t really see any argument against it. It's pretty much the 1/24/31 doing what they already do southbound and won't miss any of the currents stops as will still pick up at the station stop (by a derelict pub) and again at Hartland Road. The 27 I assume with be at Camden Gardens and won't be affected by it? |

Sadly, I can see a potential for increased crime rates along Camden High Street with this scheme. Traffic passing along it does add as a deterrence to potential thieves. Unless there is a strong police presence including nighttimes, I think Camden High Street should be buses only and the rest of motor traffic should go via the new one way scheme as proposed. |

Unless there is a strong police presence including nighttimes, I think Camden High Street should be buses only and the rest of motor traffic should go via the new one way scheme as proposed. That would be a sensible compromise. There would be a fair number of places which can be made bus-only to encourage people to use public transport |

I dont think road traffic will change anything here. This is one of the roads I travel by most and have had some crazy experiences here, involving buses or not, it is probably the most dangerous in the borough anyway, stabbings, robbery, drug dealing, r*pists, all of the above. A pedestrianised road wouldnt change anything they’d just enlarge on their territory. Another aspect is how unsafe it is with these buses, alot of people get hit, I was once popping in at Wendys and coming out 5 minutes later, to a man whose been flown away to the other side of the road being hit by the 24 and losing his legs, one time on my way to school for an exam and a school kid has been hit by a 31, and many others. At 11pm or 8am it doesnt really change anything. This proposal has been previously discussed and should have been amended ages ago |

This proposal has been previously discussed and should have been amended ages ago I think context is needed - was those two incidents the fault of the bus drivers or pedestrians not crossing properly? Pedestrianised sections can increase crime and a general unsafe nature in an area. Take Brixton - most of the violent and serious crime happens away from the main road and down the pedestrianised parts of the market. Go out further and swap pedestrian zones for estates and you have the same thing. It’s why I’ve opposed pedestrianisation of main roads through town centres - all it does is cause more trouble than good unless you do an Oxford and have buses and pedestrians use the same bit of road - works up there and Oxford is a busy old place. |
