Noticed today that new permanent traffic lights are being installed at the junction of Mitcham Lane and Southcroft Road to replace the mini roundabout there. It's been a long time since I've seen a junction I've known all my life without traffic lights now having them installed. During this process temporary lights are in operation thus already ending the roundabout operation.
Will be interesting to see whether this makes traffic situation worse or better for the 57, 333 and 201.

Hopefully along Mitcham Lane it doesn't start to build up traffic there.

I remembered that, along with the fact that on one of the days the Northern line decided to be suspended between Morden and Stockwell. Let's just say a lot of people around Tooting Bec Road was pxssed having to go to either Balham or take a bus along Streatham high road to Brixton.

If this is their way of trying to get people on buses and off their cars they better come up with another plan

If this is their way of trying to get people on buses and off their cars they better come up with another plan That comes when the traffic is so bad, The Mayor gets you to pay him 30p* a mile you drive. *Price per mile is unknown, so a wild estimate.

The worst ones are those traffic lights that only let 1-3 cars going through. Nasty tactic they're creating.

Doesn't seem to have changed much now during the Paris Olympics

Isn't the chief aim of local and regional governments to build up as much traffic as possible these days? The traffic planners really don't have a clue - in all my years of passing through that junction in all different directions at all different times, I've never had any issue and there are various safe crossing points on all three roads leading up to the mini roundabout so all it will do is add extra time to buses unfortunate enough to be caught by the lights.

I hate this idea, I have literally never seen traffic at this roundabout unless there’s a temporary light which is extremely rare and there were plenty of zebra crossings, plus the foot traffic is pretty light around there from what I see. IIRC residents were complaining about the roundabout being unsafe which sounds pretty credible although I’ve never seen any problems passing through having lived nearby for 15-16 years. Southcroft Road is very free flowing and the 333 drivers especially clear it quite quickly.
I can already see issues with the Mitcham Lane / Southcroft Road bus stop for the 57/127/333 coming from Tooting. The lights will likely cause traffic to build up slightly which blocks buses from reaching the stop until the next green light or even two and then the bus stopping means they’ll have to wait another cycle, even worse if there’s 2 or 3 of them and that trio bunching together is very common in both directions. Same stop, other direction 57/127/333 to Tooting stopping will block traffic behind them if there’s traffic on both sides of the road in a Colliers Wood cycle lane situation with one lane both ways easily getting blocked.

I’m surprised to hear of this being a hotspot for accidents, never seen or heard of any myself, the speeding however is certainly there. They could try speed cams, there is a radar speed sign on the bridge near Aldrington Road which is regularly ignored
