The House of Commons has formally appointed its eleven-member Transport Committee. Seven of its members are Labour MPs, with the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats having two members each.
The Chair is Ruth Cadbury MP (Labour, Brentford & Isleworth), who in a speech on 22nd July lauded the new Government's plans for the Better Buses Bill, describing the current ban on local authorities establishing municipally-owned operations as “ideological and control-freakery policy.” Labour intends to lift the ban.
An interesting appointee is Dr Scott Arthur, elected to Parliament as the Labour MP for Edinburgh South West in July 2024. He has been a City of Edinburgh Councillor since 2017, was appointed transport and environment convener of the City of Edinburgh Council in 2022 and subsequently became Chair of Transport for Edinburgh. He describes himself as “absolutely passionate about public transport” and says that he is “always proud of how both Lothian Trams and Lothian Buses define our city.” He has criticised a Scottish Government decision to pause the Bus Partnership Fund and rollout oif bus priority.
Also of interest is Laurence Turner (Labour, Birmingham Northfield), who has sought clarity on funding for bus franchising. In his own West Midlands area the new Mayor Richard Parker favours franchising and is expected to start the process in 2025.
The full Committee:
- Ruth Cadbury – Labour, Brentford and Isleworth (Chair)
- Steff Aquarone – Lib Dem, North Norfolk
- Dr Scott Arthur – Labour, Edinburgh South West
- Catherine Atkinson – Labour, Derby North
- Elsie Blundell – Labour, Heywood and Middleton North
- Olly Glover – Lib Dem, Didcot and Wantage
- Katie Lam – Conservative, Weald of Kent
- Alex Mayer – Labour, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard
- Baggy Shanker – Labour, Derby South
- Rebecca Smith – Conservative, South West Devon
- Laurence Turner – Labour, Birmingham Northfield
