Had a go on the Overground extension Clapham High St to Clapham Junction this afternoon. Let's just say I sincerely hope that they speed up the journey from Wandsworth Road to Clapham Junction, as it's ball-achingly slow. I don't think the train went above 10mph the whole way. If it's going to continue in that vein, I really feel for the regular commuters. Excellent view of Battersea Garage from the train though

It's going to make the East London Line interesting, trains every 3 minutes now apparently! Meanwhile, someone's moaning about the loss of a completely unused line www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-20651166

The media will then run with it to suit whatever agenda they've decided to follow. Typical journalistic confusion there if you ask me. The services haven't been withdrawn just because of Thameslink- there's been a desire for years to extend the East London Line through to other parts of South London. It just coincides with the London Bridge revamp. This is exactly why I don't read papers/watch the news- I prefer to get info from people who actually know what they're talking about and don't have an agenda to fill.

The "Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye will have no services to Victoria" is total rubbish too. They'll still have the half-hourly Southeastern trains. Peckham Rye still has its services to London Bridge too. Only places that are really inconvenienced are Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road. Clapham High Street has the Northern line so London Bridge is easily accessible, as is Embankment if you were desperate to get to Victoria. Or Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road are both close to Clapham Junction, where you can get mega-frequent trains into Victoria, or to a lot of the destinations served by Victoria. It's really quite unappreciative to moan about having a half-hourly fairly unused and unhelpful service replaced with trains every 5-10 minutes which link to the District/Hammersmith and City/DLR/Jubilee line and provide new links to East London. Some people The opposition to the new LO extension is understandable. When I lived in Denmark Hill not long ago, the South Eastern services would often struggle with the huge amount of passengers that use the Victoria trains (during peak hours). Often people couldn't get onto the SE service would get onto the Southern service which would come a few minutes after the SE train left. Personally, I'm a fan of the LO extension. I'd have still liked to see SE provide more services via Denmark Hill though.

I agree that some people will always moan but in this case there is rather more to it. The proposal was always going to be a bit controversial because it means the loss of convenient links and a reduction in frequency in some bits of the network. Given the rail network is not exactly underused you can see why people are very reluctant to see a loss of services or a worsening of journey times for people. The story of the SLL and the project to create the new Overground link is a very sorry tale of very awkward political positions and a load of posteuring for months. There is still an impasse which has stopped some simple changes to South Eastern services to add some stops at Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill to provide more service for people. The DfT stamped on that despite South Eastern, Network Rail and TfL all being content with the proposal. GLA members have asked the Mayor, about what he is doing for SLL commuters, almost every month for 18 months. We have got precisely nowhere. Even the Overground project almost stalled over funding problems and replacement services. This is why LOROL are banned from running into Victoria even in emergencies, why Surrey Canal Rd stn was scrapped and why Shoreditch High Street was shoved into Zone 1. Yes we have the new Overground service but the services for South Londoners on certain corridors are worse, some links are broken and it seems some people may be facing huge season ticket price increases from Jan as Southern only seasons (much cheaper than T/Cards) are being scrapped. With a bit of political goodwill and sensible joint working it could have been much better than it is.

Some people Or for Clapham High Street users, Northern to Stockwell, then Victoria to Victoria. There was supposed to be one early morning & late evening Southeastern train serving Clapham High Street once the Overground was up and running - is that still to be the case?

With a bit of political goodwill and sensible joint working it could have been much better than it is. I'm not so sure. Most of the affected stations still have direct connections to major termini, and are only one change away from either Victoria or London Bridge. The only real losers are patrons at Clapham High St or Wandsworth Rd, however both these stations have significantly lower usage figures that others on ELLX2. I would be very surprised if this time next year, those figures have significantly increased, which would show the success of the venture. I do agree however that Southeastern should have been able to run a Victoria-Bellingham service as was proposed. That they weren't shows the real weaknesses in the rail franchise system, supposed to increase competition, but has actually created cartels which passengers and other interested group are powerless to do anything about

Looks like the Overground is getting longer trains, plans have been announced to add another carriage to lengthen the trains from 4 to 5 cars. Some were originally only 3 cars but have been lengthened already to 4 cars www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/27154.aspx.

Probably going to have to extend the platforms at Canada Water etc. as it appears the 4-car trains just about fit. Selective door-opening could be used but that would probably be unpopular and impractical.

The trains from West Croydon - Canada Water get too full! I mean 4 Coach trains sorry needs to be 8 IMO . Even though some platforms can only fit 4 coaches the trains are actually walk through so people should not have a problem alighting.

You'd have to completely redesign some of the ELL platforms as Canada Water and others just about accommodate 4 car trains. I suppose 5 is a compromise here as it would only require minor platform extensions. Ironically, in the evening peak southbound (when the trains are usually the most crowded) everyone deserts the train at New Cross Gate!

It would be easier to combine Canada Water & Rotherhithe Into 1 Station. Looking in the Tunnel at CW. You can see Rotherhithe Directly!

Many stations are like that, e.g Sunnymeads & Datchet.
