Government has published details of high speed line 2 proposals (warning it is a large file) which is London - Heathrow - west Midlands - and possibly North High speed 1 is the St Pancras - Channel Tunnel line which is already open www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/rail/pi/highspeedtwo/highspeedtwo.pdfMaybe they can lease the trains from South Eastern seeing as half of them are stabled at Ebsfleet due to low patronage

Hows this for a waste of Electricity: The last Highspeed Train, London St Pancras Intl - Faversham, is terminating at Gillingham this week due to late night engineering works between Gillingham and Sittingbourne.
Now the train needs to go to Ramsgate Depot (where the HS sets are based) for cleaning etc. To acheive this the train has to run ALL THE WAY BACK to STRATFORD, change ends and then all the way back down to Ebbsfleet where it'll join the Kent Main Line (not the High Speed Line) and run to ramsgate via Ashford and Dorver Priory, EMPTY!
What a waste of energy!!!

What a waste of energy!!! The running of these trains on the Gillingham line always seems to be a waste of energy, whenever I get a train towards London the HS is virtually empty, Charing X & Victoria trains always busy. Then again didnt the people of Kent tell the powers that be that they wanted the service to terminate at Waterloo.

HS trains do not really make much sense in a small heavilly populated country such as the UK. Most trains in the UK carry passengers. Freight is a pretty insignificant part of the traffic and HS would not help with freight in any case as freight trains would have to travel at much slower speeds. Freighht on rail in general also increases road traffic & it actually takes longer. You might be able to use rail to take freight from a port to a Hub Warehouse but you still have to use road for hub to hub traffic & hub to stores traiffic. HS also means they end up cutting out most of the stops so it ends up pretty useless for most passengers as well. The only possible use of an HS line is to take people and traffic to Europe whether there is enough traffic might be another thing. Through trains to europe are unlikely because of the high security now reuired.

I've noticed just how much the freight traffic increases after the evening rush hour, although in Stratford that's a minor increase at the moment. Also, the current proposal for the HS2 seems to work well for me. You already have two services calling at Intermediate stations along the line in Virgin and London Midland. Personally, if I could get to Edinburgh in 2 hours, then I would be going to the festival more often!! Also, may I point forward to you, another country of a small island that has a vast high speed network.......Japan. It works pretty d*mn well there, so I can't see why it wouldn't work here either. Granted population levels are different, but it could well work, especially for commuting to/from London

I think that they should charage standard fares. Why should other South Eastern trains be packed out and yet capacity exists on the high speed lines. Public transport should be for all to use. Its a great acheivement so why are we not making the most of it. HS trains do not really make much sense in a small heavilly populated country such as the UK. Most trains in the UK carry passengers. Freighht on rail in general also increases road traffic & it actually takes longer. Freight on rail increases road traffic compared to the alternative of freight on roads?

Well, saying that rail fares aren't exactly cheap anyway but I see your point ;D I mean, NatEx charge something like £5 return for Harold Wood to Shenfield.......TWO STOPS!!!!

But I think there is quite a difference in prices between HS and South Eastern. Not for me of course I think that they should charage standard fares. You can use the HS trains between Gravesend and Faversham with standard South Eastern issued tickets. I did so both ways on Saturday on my way to the EKR open day at Shepherds Well.

I have heard the German ICE will be in St Pancras on 19th Oct probably be an ICE3M (M= multiple system as they are are equipped to operate in France, and HS1 uses same TVM430 signalling). There is a new version of Velaro train which will meet the Channel Tunnel fire rating, and there is unconfirmed reports it will be shown at Innotrans exhibition, then used on test if ready. If tests are successful it is expected service might start in 2013 using some of the type ordered in last paragraph of this article www.mobility.siemens.com/mobility/en/pub/interurban_mobility/rail_solutions/highspeed_and_intercity_trains/velaro.htm

There are also proposals of creating a service to Amsterdam from St Pancreas too
