Well, just because something is going to go through Chilterns doesn't automatically mean the Chilterns will suddenly be destroyed. Done the right way a rail line can actually enhance the landscape IMO. I agree. Just take HS1 for example, it goes through some stunning Kent countryside yet it's either hidden from view with high banks, going through tunnels or alongside a dual carriageway/motorway. The result being that it hasn't had a massive effect on the views. It goes through Dagenham too.....made it look much better at a 140mph blur!! ;D The problem I see is that people are more than happy for an urban rail project, like Crossrail, yet when it comes to linking cities like London and Birmingham then it all gets messy. My question to those challenging HS2 is how many drive a high CO2 emitting car?? It's not as if the line is going through a poor area so how much damage will this line do against the residents in their cars? It's constant contradictions from people against such projects without a valid reason in my eyes. Vjaska, no problem mate. Each person is entitled to their opinion on things and I won't knock someone for what was clearly a comment made in jest Your views on Arsenal however need sorting out, especially after last night's win for the white half of North London ;D

£9bn WCML upgrade £250m Chiltern Mainline upgrade, why is HS2 needed?
I think it all boils down to Politics, Britain want to seal their status as a technological advanced nation with the likes of China and Japan who also have high speed lines and our neighbours the French.
Utter waste of money, I just hope the Trains used are from a U.K manufacturer e.g Bombardier.

Or we want a railway network that can actually get people to places much quicker and relieve over crowding off existing lines.

Utter waste of money, I just hope the Trains used are from a U.K manufacturer e.g Bombardier. Because the WCML upgrade actually achieved very little, and was behind the schedule and over budget. It succeeded in increasing the speed of the fast trains but did nothing to increase capacity due to increased speed differential between fast and slow trains. All in all it represented poor value for money. Capacity is running out and most commuter and intercity trains are full to the brim. The only sensible solution is separating them onto different tracks, and building new tracks for the intercity is cheaper than for commuter trains as the former wouldn't need to go through so many smaller settlements. That it's high-speed is a mere bonus at very little extra cost.

Probably because those upgrades increased capacity only marginally and doesn't cater for major growth in the FUTURE. And to be honest growth is what HS2 is about, it isn't about shaving a few minutes of the trip to Birmingham even though that is generally what is being talked about in mainstream media.
