March '10 will have a "1" as the age identifier and September will have "6" - for more information have a look at this website which has more information

I wonder what they'll think of when it comes to 2050?

That's a long way off yet ;D ;D I'm not sure they could use the 0/5x numbers as they have already been used.

The present registration number system is only valid up to the year 2049 (i.e. 49/99). After that a new system will be developed which will be the current sytem in reverse like RTY LX51 or FRT 51LX

Surely the CAA will gave replaced the DVLA by 2050?
Seriously though, I would be surprised if by that time there is not at least a Europe-wide standard rather than each country doing have their own styles.

I think ourselves and Germany are similar in systems currently. The Irish also has an area and age style system, but i'm not sure on the rest of Western Europe

France and Italy both have the same style now of two letters, three numbers, then two more letters. They then have an area code on a blue strip which is mandatory in France but I think is only voluntary in Italy. No age code though.

A local area Identifier, two letters, and then numbers (normally which one of the previous letters you are). When my dad was in Germany his BMW had "F CG 250" with F being Frankfurt, CG being his other halfs initials and then the 250. German efficiency ;D

The Gerrman registration system is NOT like the UK one. Any brand new car in the UK is entitled to have a new, up-to-date registration. However, in Germany, the story is very different. In Germany, they re-use registrations. If a vehicle is scrapped, the registration is returned to the local authority for re-use. Also, if you move from, say, Berlin (which has the registration B) to Munich (which is M), then you have to re-register your car.
