455868 is being repainted into a "heritage" livery, will be running between Bournemouth and Waterloo on 04/03 on an employee-only service before heading out into public service.

The service has been reportedly cancelled due to a partial derailment of 450092 at Walton-on-Thames damaging the 3rd and signalling cables The special trip with 5868 is likely to be re-scheduled. Yesterday's run was cancelled due to 2L10 (the 04.54 Basingstoke - Waterloo via East Putney) striking an obstruction on the conductor rail at Walton-on-Thames which caused the leading bogie to derail severing cables as well as damaging track. Passengers were evacuated by ladder in due course and walked along the track to Walton station for onward road transport. This is not the first time 2L10 has derailed. It was this train around seven years ago which came off as it traversed the NR - TfL link at Wimbledon. It then sat in the dirt for several days while the two tried to sort out who owned that bit of track. It was not documented so a new agreement had to be reached after the fact. Having recovered the train it was then many weeks before repairs were effected and the link re-opened. During that time 2L10 came via Earlsfield - as indeed it does fairly regularly anyway. It is booked via East Putney to maintain crew route knowledge but if a crew member is rostered who does n't sign the District Line it has to stay on the main line. A colleague who uses this train most days has now been evacuated from it by ladder twice having been involved in both derailments. What are the chances?

There may not have been enough time to warn and stop that train.

The incident was reported shortly before 2L10 hit an object and the train stopped at Surbiton for almost 30 minutes to inspect damage to it but I believe it wasn't significant enough for a line block to be implemented, I'm sure RAIB will be allover the handling of the first incident and how the object was there(presumably left behind after engineering works) Very lucky for there to be no fatalities or injuries.

Not sure if anyone cares, but if you do, NatRail have confirmed the object to be a piece of scrap rail left behind during scrap clearance (a process of clearing up scrap rails and materials left behind from previous track renewals/works)

I am asking sources about this claim. SWR has been caught out by the collapse of VivaRail who supplied their trains but GWR has purchased the technology and a shed-load of spares among other things. SWR had stated it would offer a 30-minute 4-car service in summer though has back-tracked from introducing this in May with the new tiemtable and has most recently said "only in peak summer when demand justifies it". A two-train service requires two units; a two-train 4-car service would require 4 out of 5 units so if one is being cannibalised that means 100% availability on paper.

A lightweight rail vehicle could shuttle on Ryde Pier.

Every 40 minutes is as good as useless. Every hour is better because it would meet all of the hourly ferries. Every 40 minutes will only connect nicely with around one in five ferries. One of hte main reasons the line survives is because of the legacy requirement to retain Ryde Pier which goes hand in hand with meeting the ferries that offer around half of the Island's rail traffic.
